Overall award for St Michael’s Kilmihil


The Clare Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships were held at the Lees Road Sports Complex and attracted a fine turnout of athletes for the eight races.

The Tully Cup for the best overall school was retained by St Michael’s Kilmihil on 64 points from St Joseph’s Spanish Point on 51. with St Flannan’s and Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon joint third on 35.

The first race of the day was the minor girls’ 1,500m and this was a great contest, with Amy Barrett (Scariff) doing all the hard work at the front. Katie Power (Coláiste Muire Ennis ) had to produce a sprint finish to take this title. Kilkee Community College won the team title on 61. points from St Joseph’s Spanish Point on 91.

In the minor boys, Paul Martin (Rice College) led all the way from start to finish with Patrick O’Rourke (Lisdoonvarna Secondary School) coming with a late finish to take the silver medal with Sean Rouine (Ennistymon CBS) a very good third. (St Joseph’s Tulla) won the team title on 38 oints from St Flannan’s on 52 and St Joseph’s Spanish Point on 72.

The third race was the junior ladies, with Aisling Kelly (Spanish Point) and Caoimhíe Harvey (Kilkee) setting a blistering pace from the start and they both had this field in single file very early. Aisling Kelly made a very decisive break and came home a very good winner from Caoimhie Harvey with a battle for the minor placings and Shauna Melican (Gael Choláiste an Chláir) finished the third spot ahead of Mia Hanrahan (St Flannan’s) with Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon taking the team gold medals on 49 points ahead of Coláiste Muire Ennis on 54 and St Michael’s Kilmihil on 62.

The junior boys’ 2,000m was dominated by Eoin Looney (Spanish Point). After 500m, he was 30m clear and he held that lead all the way to the finish with Jamie Roche (St Flannan’s) second followed by Stephen Maher (St Flannan’s), with St Flannan’s taking the team award on 20 points from (St Joseph’s Tulla) on 70 and Kilkee on 73.

The fifth race was the intermediate girls over 3,000m and this was dominated by Laura Power (Coláiste Muire Ennis ), who led from the start to take the title ahead of Shannon O’Grady (Coláiste Muire Ennis ) with Nollaigh Blake (St Michael’s Kilmihil) holding onto third spot from the fast-finishing Gránne Cremin (Coláiste Muire Ennis). Coláiste Muire Ennis easily won the team title on 18 points from Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 35 and St Michael’s Kilmihil on 46.

In the intermediate boys, three athletes made an early break, Kevin Mulcaire, Sean Collins (both (St Flannan’s) and Conail O Hainfein (Gael Choláiste an Chláir) and these three were shoulder to shoulder until the final lap when Mulcaire pushed on and held a slight lead all the way to the finish to take the gold medal from Conail Ó Hainfein and Sean Collins, with St Flannan’s taking the team gold on 34 points, just four ahead of Ennistymon Vocational School with St Michael’s Kilmihil next on 87.

In the senior girls’ 3,000m, Laura Egan (St Michael’s Kilmihil) led for almost 2,000m before Róisín Considine (Ennistymon Vocational School) powered her way around the final 800m to win in fine style, with Muireann O’Shea (Coláiste Muire Ennis ) finishing very strong and taking the silver medal, with the early leader Laura Egan finishing third.

The team title went to Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 34 points, just three points ahead of St Michael’s Kilmihil, with St Joseph’s Spanish Point third on 38 points.

The senior boys’ 5,000m was a much closer affair, with Stephen Rooney (Gael Choláiste an Chláir) making all the early running and he led this race up to the final 100m.

Karl Fitzmaurice (St Pat’s Shannon) rounded the home straight and produced a mighty sprint finish to take the title from Stephan Rooney and Patrick Chesser (Rice College) with Scariff Community College taking the team title on 28 points ahead of Ennistymon CBS on 51. and St Joseph’s Spanish Point on 79.
