The Clare Athletics Association Juvenile U-9 to U-19 plus Intermediate and U-23 Cross Country Championships were held on the lands of the Hannon Family, Newmarket-on-Fergus, hosted by Bridge Milers/Olympic Harriers.
In ideal underfoot conditions and beautiful sunshine, there were some outstanding individual performances, with big fields of athletes in all races.
Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare captured the Clare Athletics Association Shield for the best overall club on day two, with team victories in the girls’ and boys’ U-11 and U-13 and gold in the boys’ U-15. In addition, they were second in the girls’ U-15 and in the boys U-17 for a total of 97 points. In second place were Ennis Track on 80 points followed by St Mary’s on 47.
The intermediate and U-23 ladies was an all-in-one race and the Clare AAI novice champion Anna Crooks (Ennis Track) ran a very big race to take this title. She led from start to finish in the 4,000m to take the gold medal with Grace Eade (Ennis Track) putting in a strong finish to take the silver medal and Noreen Mackey (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) holding on to take the bronze from the fast-finishing Michelle O’Mahoney (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare).
The team title went to Ennis Track on 15 points from Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare on 23 points and Ennis Track on 41 points.
The intermediate men’s race was run over a distance of 8,000m and over three laps. Three athletes made an early break on the first lap, Brian Murphy (Ennis Track), Joe Mooney (BMOH) and Damian Landers (St John’s), with the chasing group led by three BMOH athletes, James Liddane, Keith Lynch and John Hannon and with one lap complete BMOH had six athletes in the top 20.
Damian Landers made a big move when the bell went for the final lap and he opened up a very good lead on his way to taking the title in fine style from Joe Mooney and Brian Murphy with Bridgemilers-Olympic Harriers took the team title with a total of 56 points from Ennis Track on 63 and St John’s on 84.
The juvenile races attracted a fine turnout and there was some great competition.
