Overall award for Hillery at Moy

THE second annual Tommy White Memorial and the 35th Moy Open Sports Day was held in Moy football field in beautiful weather conditions and a huge crowd of athletes turned out.

The 3,000m was the first race of the day and Jason Fahy (Olympic Harriers) displayed a fine piece of front running over 10 laps to take the Michael White Memorial Shield. Tom Mackey (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) was second followed by Caoimhin Donnellan (Kilmihil). In the ladies’ 3,000m, Marian Burke (St Mary’s) and Laura Egan (Kilmihil) led the way for five of the 10 laps. Burke took over with two laps remaining and held on to take the title and the Tommy White Memorial Shield. Last year’s winner, Laura Egan was second with Noreen Mackey (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) working hard to take third spot.
The best-overall-athlete award for the Michael White Memorial Trophy presented by Bríd White went to Eimear Hillery (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) for the second year in-a-row after she captured the U-16 100m, penalty shoot-out, shot putt, bicycle race and finished second in the 300m.
The 56lbs for distance was a mighty contest with Tommy Greene (St John’s) producing three fine throws and a final throw of 6.51m to beat last year’s winner, Martin Fitzpatrick (St Mary’s). Green also won the senior men’s shot putt title.
The five-a-side tug o’ war, organised by John Looney, attracted teams from Kilfarboy, Kilnaboy A, Four Crosses, Kilnaboy B, Fanore and Curtin Agri with the Curtin Agri team of John and Willie Curtin, Tom Kennedy, Pat Hohie, Kieran O’Brien and coach Francy O’Brien taking on Four Crosses that included Micheál, Noel and Ray O Brien, John Looney and James Cullinan with team coach Michael Curtin in the final. Four Crosses won the title.
