O’Sullivan opposed to boundary extension

A FRESH look should be taken at the Brosnan Report dealing with new governance arrangements for South-East Clare and Limerick City.

That’s according to newly elected Minister of State, Deputy Jan O’Sullivan, who has signalled her opposition to the proposed recommendation contained in the report for the extension of Limerick City into parts of South-East Clare.
Deputy O’Sullivan, who was appointed Minister of State for Trade and Development including overseas aid, called for a fresh look to be taken at the Limerick Local Government Report following the controversial recommendations made by the committee, chaired by Mid-West businessman Denis Brosnan.
Former Environment Minister John Gormley had hoped to address this issue before the last Fianna Fáil-Green coalition left office but this never materialised.
Deputy O’Sullivan said she is opposed to an amalgamation of Limerick city and county councils and suggested instead a limited boundary extension of the city should be given for some parts of the county to increase the natural rates base of the former corporation.
