O’Neill hat-trick helps St Joseph’s to well-earned victory

St Joseph’s 4-10   Scariff 1-12

St Joseph’s came away from Scariff with a comfortable win on Saturday evening in Division 1 B.

With inter-county panellist Alan O’Neill in scoring form, the Doora-Barefield men were 1-2 to 0-2 in front after 10 minutes, the goal coming from a 20m free by O’Neill.

Scariff battled back and a Barry Nash goal drew them level at 1-5 each.

Alphie Rodgers hit a brace to put the home side ahead but an Ivor White goal helped the winners to go back in front.

When the half-time whistle sounded, it was 2-6 to 1-8 in favour of the eventual winners. The Doora-Barefield men hit 2-2 in the opening seven minutes of the second half and this scoring burst proved decisive on the day. Both goals came from O’Neill, with the first in this half from another 20m free.

Scariff hit back with points from Alan Corbett and Conor McNamara, whose effort for a goal from a 20m free was deflected over. Shortly before the full-time whistle, both sides were reduced to 14 men when Matthew Horan (Scariff) and Aaron Landy (St Joseph’s) were dismissed.

The home side continued to battle to the finish but the goals proved decisive for St Joseph’s and they emerged worthy winners.

The teams were level on a number of occasions in the second half when Kilmaley’s second goal came from Pádraig Talty. However, the visitors converted some good, long-range points, which proved decisive in ensuring they were two points ahead when the final whistle sounded.
