THE paintings of Ennis artist, Tomás O’Maoldomhnaigh, are currently on display at Kenny’s Gallery in Lahinch.
Tomás’works can be found all over Ireland and is represented on the walls of many of the country’s top corporate companies. His exhibitions are held on an ongoing basis and paintings have been sold to the United States, Europe, Africa and Australia. He now lives and works as a full-time artist and illustrator in his adopted hometown of Ennis. He was born in Limerick, however, his grandmother came from Ennis and his great aunts still lived there when he decided to make Ennis his home 18 years ago.
“As an artist, I’m enthralled to put brush to canvas; it is at once both public and private. The world I reveal is an expression of my passion for both classic European portraiture and bright contemporary realism. I’m in awe of artists such as Sargent, Orpen and the American Tony Ryder. I find the classic styles to be timeless, with a warmth and honesty not offered any more with modern movements,” Tomás said.
His exhibition at Kenny’s Gallery in Lahinch, entitled Musical Landscapes, explores his journey through Clare and Munster and his love of the sea.
Tomás’ landscapes of Clare are from such diverse locations as Steeles Rock, Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty and several views of Lahinch. There are also a number of seascapes of the west on display.
He says that he plans to paint “as long as I can”. “The beauty of the scenery still captivates me and I know many inspiring places that I still wish to paint. Even when I return to a favourite scene that I have painted before, I get all excited again,” he adds.
Tomás has had 16 solo exhibitions. These included two in Dublin and last year in the Limerick City Gallery of Art. Some of the others were in Mayo, Kerry and Waterford. He also completed an artist residency in the famed Cill Rialaig Ballinskelligs, County Kerry. His works can be seen on his website www.tomásartist.com.
In this exhibition in Kenny’s Gallery Lahinch, he is joined by the renowned Galway painter, Fran McCann. The exhibition will continue until July 14 at Kenny’s Gallery, Main Street, Lahinch.
