A penalty shoot-out was needed to decide the destination of the Division One League Cup when Shannon Olympic and Turnpike Rovers clashed at Doora on Sunday.
In perfect conditions for football on an excellent pitch, the sides were evenly matched throughout.
Turnpike had the better of the early exchanges and took the lead as early as the seventh minute when David McMahon made a great run down the right before cutting in and crashing a powerful effort to the net.
They continued to hold the edge for much of the first half but failed to add to McMahon’s goal.
As the game moved towards half time, Olympic were doing better and when they second half got underway they piled on the pressure.
However, they were dealt a big blow on the hour mark when Karl Fogarty was sent off for a tackle on Chris Shannon. The resultant free by David McMahon was well saved by McGettrick.
Twenty minutes from the end, the Shannon outfit got back on terms when Karl Scott provided the pass from which Jason Regan hit the equaliser.
In the first period of extra time, Turnpike created the best chance but Gary McGettrick in the Olympic goal saved well from Fergal Brennan.
In the second period, Olympic came closest but Karl Scott’s effort was well saved by Turnpike keeper Keith Ryan.
Karl Scott scored the first penalty in the shoot-out to put Olympic in front. Turnpike’s first, from Danny Russell, was saved by McGettrick. Jason Regan, Jason Stretton and Gareth McPhillips all found the target for the winners while Danny Russell, David McMahon and Dermot Gannon all scored for the Pike. This left Chris Shannon needing to score his effort to send the shoot out to sudden death but his effort rebounded off the post and Olympic were champions.
Best for Olympic on the day was the outstanding Captain Jay Regan, his midfield partner Gareth McPhilips and left-back Ian Hogan.
After the game, Clare Soccer League registrar Leo Murphy presented the cup to the winning captain Jason Regan.
