Ollie sniffs out drugs haul

A CUSTOMS dog at Shannon Airport earned his Pedigree Chum on Tuesday, uncovering a quantity of herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of between €250,000 and €300,000.

The dog, whose name is Ollie, discovered the quantity in a consignment of freight that had arrived in the airport.

Pat Nagle, customs manager for Clare, Limerick and Kerry, said the cannabis was found following a routine examination on cargo.

Mr Nagle also said the drugs were in a parcel destined for an address in Munster.

The drugs have been sent to the State Laboratory in the Phoenix Park for examination and a copy of the report taken there will be sent to the Customs Service and to the gardaí.

“We will be continuing our investigations on it to see if there’s any similar type of shipment that is coming through or that has come through in the past,” Mr Nagle added.

It was the biggest air freight cannabis seizure at Shannon in recent years.
