Inter-county men Conor Cooney and Pat Donnellan stood out for the winners on a day when they availed of whatever chances came their way while St Joseph’s wasted a lot of scoring opportunities.

Smith O’Brien’s 1-14  Scariff 0-15

HELPED by a goal from John Cusack, Smith O’Brien’s made a winning start to their domestic senior hurling season when they overcame neighbours Scariff in this Clare Champion Cup tie played at Scariff on Sunday evening.
The Killaloe side led at the interval on a score of 1-7 to 0-8 and they maintained this advantage to the end. However, it didn’t look good for the Killaloe side in the early stages as Scariff raced into a five-point lead.
Cusack’s goal helped the winners get a grip and from here to the finish, there was little between the teams. The loss of Barry Murphy due to injury didn’t help the Scariff men but, at the final whistle, Smith O’Brien’s deserved their narrow victory.

Patrick Keegan picked off some great points in this half and he started the second half in similar fashion firing over two excellent points.

It was 1-5 to 0-3 for the home side at half-time with the goal coming from Cyril Crowe. The ’Bridge were down to 14 just before the break when Mark Culbert picked up a second yellow card.
