THERE will be no new works of art added to Ennis’ sculpture trail this year due to a reduction in funding.
At the recent adoption of Ennis Town Council’s budget for 2012, town manager Ger Dollard announced the budget provision does not provide for any new pieces.
According to Mr Dollard, “Ennis Sculpture Initiative has been a very successful initiative for Ennis and has helped to give Ennis a distinguishing feature over other towns.”
He stated three major sculpture initiatives were progressed during 2011. These were the relocation of Icarus to the Rocky Road roundabout; the installation of the Information Age Town sculpture at Clonroad Park and the commencement of preparatory works for a major piece at the market roundabout.
“The completion of these three projects is a very significant addition to the overall Ennis Sculpture Trail.
“The budget provision for 2012 does not provide for any new pieces. The provision made will assist in maintaining the extensive sculpture trail that is now in place,” Mr Dollard stated.
Councillor Johnny Flynn commented, “Ennis is, per square kilometre, one of the best-served places in Ireland for public art.”
