No joy for local football sides in Munster action

Barry Lynch scored St Flannan’s opening goal.

There were three Clare college teams in action in round two of the Corn Ui Mhuiri, Munster colleges Senior A Football Championship, on Wednesday afternoon but, disappointingly, all suffered defeat
Despite a six point loss to Coláiste Chríost Rí at Kilmallock, St Flannan’s should still qualify for the knock-out stage of the competition as a result of their first round win over Coláiste na Sceilge.

The West and North Clare college sides have now suffered two defeats and their chances of getting through to the play-offs have all but disappeared.

Coláiste Chríost Rí 2-12   St Flannan’s 2-6

St Flannan’s went into this tie without Eoin Hanrahan, Conor O’Brien, Stephen Ward and the injured Martin O’Leary who were a big loss to the Ennis school.

Coláiste Chríost Rí got off to a great start and with the help of a goal from the penalty spot were 1-2 to 0-0 in front.

A Barry Lynch goal together with points from Eimhin Courtney, David Conroy and Lynch saw the sides level at 1-3 each but the Cork side finished the half strongly and led 1-6 to 1-3 at half time.

They stretched their lead to five points early in the second half before Courtney had a St Flannan’s point. Chríost Rí stretched their advantage to eight points (2-10 to 1-5) before a Courtney goal gave St Flannan’s hope. They finished with a point from centre-back Aidan McGuane.

A lively Rochestown team proved too strong for West Clare colleges at Martinstown in Limerick on Wednesday. The winners were 2-6 to 0-3 in front at half time in a tie in which the players had to cope with a difficult crossfield wind.
