No joy for Clare clubs in Barton Shield

A NUMBER of Clare clubs took part in the North Munster section of the Barton Shield at Limerick Golf Club at the weekend.
On Saturday, Dromoland made a winning start when they beat Adare Manor by one hole. Ennis lost out to Roscrea by the same margin, while East Clare lost by four holes to Limerick and this was also the margin as Castletroy beat Woodstock.
In the afternoon, Shannon beat Dromoland by eight holes, while Castletroy accounted for Lahinch by six holes.
Nenagh beat Shannon by two holes on Sunday and they went on to account for Limerick, by one hole, in the final to qualify for the next stage.
Meanwhile, in the Fred Daly boys’ competition Shannon beat Ennis by four and three, while Lahinch were winners over Woodstock in matches played at Dromoland.
On July 8, Shannon will play Lahinch at Limerick.
The North Munster semi-finals will be played at East Clare on July 14 at 9am with the final at the same venue at 4pm.

Woodstock
THE weekly seniors’ competition at Woodstock was a team-of-three modified scramble played over 16 holes.
The winners, with 47 points, were Michael O’Brien, Tom Malone and Brendan McNamara.
In the open singles on Wednesday, the winner was Joe Keane (13) with 43 points from Frank Doherty (10) with 42 points and John Neylon (21) with 41 points.
The Holmpatrick Cup fourball in aid of the National Council for the Blind, was won by Ollie McNamara (12) and Seosamh O’Riordain (13) with 45 points. They will advance to the area final in July.
In the ladies’ 18 hole Stableford competition, the winner was Patricia Graham. The mixed scramble winners last week were Mike Reen, Matt Power and Patsy Nugent.
The mixed scramble continues on Thursday evenings with the tee reserved from 5.30pm to 6.15pm.
Entries for the Sleelagh Garvey matchplay are now being accepted.
The lady captain’s (Margaret Ann Killeen) prize will be played for this weekend.

Ennis
ENNIS Seniors held a 14-hole fourball competition last week when the winners, with 43 points were Peadar Cosgrove and Jimmy McNamara followed by Terry Hughes and Tom Pender with a similar score. In third spot with 41 were Jim Felle and Pat Cusack, followed by Dick Herbert and Michael Torpey with 40, John Keane and Tony Coote with 40, Tim Kelly and Johnny Cullinan with 38, Paddy Cahill and Martin Connolly, also with 38.
In the ladies’ 18-hole competition in aid of the blind of Clare, the winner was Flor Coffey with 40 points from Elaine Whelan with a similar score and Mary Leahy with 38.
In the Friday open, Flor Coffey was also the winner, with 39 points from Maeve O’Grady with 38.

Dromoland
DROMOLAND Golf and Country Club hosted a men’s singles v par competition at the weekend when the winner, with two-up, was Sean Burns from Alan Larkin with a similar score. Gerry McInerney was third with one-up followed by Ronan Mullane with a score of level.
This week’s men’s completion is 18-hole singles Stableford competing for the Holmpatrick Cup.
In the ladies’ singles, the winner of the medal competition was Mairéad Bergin with 73 from Suzanne McConway with 77 and Katrina O’Neil, also with 77, Joan Ryan won the gross.
The club’s intermediate ladies’ team lost out to East Clare in Ballykisteen.

Kilkee
THE qualifiers for the semi-finals in the members’ cup at Kilkee were David O’Flynn (8) with 68, Gerry O’Halloran (17) with 69, Ger O’ Flynn (12) with 70 and Mick Ahern (13) with 70.
In the semi-finals, Mick Ahern (13) beat David O’Flynn (8) one-up, while Ger O’Flynn (12) beat Gerry O’Halloran (17) 5/3.
In the ladies’ competition, the winner was Yvonne McGann (35) with 42 points from Caroline Harrington (34) with 33 points and Maura Mulcahy (19) with 32. The gross was won by Ann Boyle (15) with 17 points.

Lahinch
THE winner of the ladies’ Challenge Cup at Lahinch was Angela Cullinan who beat Jean Basheer in the final. The beaten semi-finalists were Elaine Doyle and Connie Fahy.
Last Thursday’s men’s open singles Stableford competition was won by Noel Lorday (18) from Kilrush with 39 points. Bill Frazer (13) from Lahinch was second with 35 points followed by Patrick McElhinney (6) with 34 points. Jason Considine from Woodstock won the gross with 30 points.
In the men’s monthly medal competition on Saturday, the winner was John Morris (8) with 78 nett from Patrick Glynn (6) with 81.
The Holmpatrick Cup, a men’s fourball Stableford competition, was played for on Sunday when the winners were Leonard (6) and Ger Shanahan (13) with 32 points.

East Clare
DEREK Kenny’s captain’s prize was played for at East Clare last weekend. The qualifying conditions on both the Saturday and Sunday were difficult with wind and rain.
Nonetheless, the scoring was decent and going into the nine-hole play-off on Sunday evening only five shots separated the qualifiers, 70 being the leading score.
It could not have finished closer with two players tied after the evening nine holes and the eventual winner was decided on a count-back. Tom Browne, who had led the qualifiers with a 70 nett, came back in the evening with a 35.5 nett to give him a total of 105.5. Nick Ryan, who had qualified with a 72 nett, played a very solid nine holes to shoot a 33.5 nett in the play-off. Nick, who has held the positions of captain, president and chairman of the club, was a very popular winner. Kieran Kennedy was a further 2.5 shots back in third. Mike Whelan won the gross with a 75 in the morning. Fourth spot went to Michael O’Hanlon, followed by William O’Brien and Andrew Moloney.
The category winners were Caimin Condren, John Duffy and Kieran Quinn.
The seniors’ section was won by Brendan Moloney and past captain’s by Redmond Walsh. Brendan Foley won the longest drive and Michael B Noonan won the nearest the pin. Best Saturday score went to Kevin Grimes and best Sunday score to Paul Hayes.
In the ladies’ open singles, the winner was Celia Moloney with 44 points from Tara Whelan with 40 points.
In the men’s senior open singles, the winner was Richard Keating with 43 points from Martin Mulhall on 41 and Eamonn Mulhall on 40.
The winners of the three-ball scramble were Jim Greene, Mike and Tara Whelan.
Paddy Moloney won the men’s open singles with 41 points from Conor Hayes with 39 and Tony McNulty with 39.

Shannon
THE winner of last week’s open singles at Shannon was Ronan O’Reilly (15) with 44 points, from Darren Ryan (18) with 42 points and Alan Linton (18) with 41 points. Paul O’Neill (scratch) won the gross with 38 points.
In the Paddy Carroll Memorial June medal, the club’s general manager, Mike Corry (9) was the winner with 65. He had two to spare over Noel Morgan (12) with Sean Daly (21) two shots further back on 69 in third spot. They were followed by Maurice Hartery (9) with 70, Alan Power (22) with (70), Hugh Heaney (1) with 70, Michael J Hickey (8) with 70 and Vincent Hodge (9) with 71. Jamie O’Shea (2) won the gross with 76.

Kilrush
THE winners of last week’s ladies’ seniors’ outing at Kilrush were Margaret Clancy, Kathleen Haugh and Anne Cooper from Margaret Griffin, Mary Carmody and Mary Collins with third spot filled by Marion Brennan, Marion Roche and Agnes Shannon.
The men’s seniors’ outing was won by TJ Lyons, Tom O’Dea and Noel Enright with 77 points, from Paddy Carmody, David Eastham and Sean Moran with 75, with third spot filled by Denis F Nagle, Tom Cleary and Maurice Roche with 73.
The lady vice -captain’s (Anne Hogan) prize was played for last Thursday when the winner was Geraldine Burke with 39 points from Annie Gallagher with 38, Margaret Clancy with Miriam Saunders, Margaret Hehir and Doleros Reidy, all with 37.
The category winners were Anne Coen with 34, Mary McNamara with 35 and Freda Moran with 37.
On Saturday, the men’s vice-captain’s (Finbarr McMahon) prize was played for when the winner was Gerard Kelly with 40 points from Christy Cosgrove with a similar score. Brian Scanlan was third with 39, while Jim Young senior won the gross with 28. The category winners were Fergal O’Shea with 33, Bernie Clancy with 36 and Pat Shannon (Cranny) with 34. The nines were won by Pat Shannon with 20 and Jim O’Brien with 23. Gerard Kelly also won nearest the pin with the long drive won by Diarmuid Murphy. The visitors’ section was won by Seamus Hayes, from PJ Daly.
Sunday’s singles Stableford competition was won by Packie O’Dea with 31 points.
The Bridie Culligan mixed will be the competition on this Friday, with the draw at 6.15pm. The competition on Saturday will be a team of four to mark the 25th anniversary of Kilrush Hospital, while on Sunday, the Hospital Cup, a men’s singles Stableford event, will take place. The draw for the Hartman Cup will take place this weekend.

Spanish Point
THE Nozomi open day competition was won by Maura Burke (27) (Adare) on a score of 43 points, followed by Sinéad Sexton (1) (Lahinch) with 39 points, Kathleen O’Brien (17) (Adare) 36 points, Kathleen Dunworth (27) (Castletroy) and Geraldine Reddan (22) (Spanish Point) on 34 points.
The president’s (Tom Mernagh) prize to the ladies was won by Helen O’Sullivan (35) with a score of 29 points, from Karen White (24) 29 points and Yvonne O’Keeffe (28) 27 points.

Gort
THE competition at Gort at the weekend was the lady captain’s (Phil Mulkerrins) prize to the men, which was won by Gerry Broderick (14) with 43 points, from David McAllen (17) with 41, Jerry Leahy (10) with 39 and John Walsh (23) with 39. The gross was won by Eamonn Morrissey (6) with 29 points.
In the Friday open singles, the winner was Tom Finneran (14) with 39 from John Rodgers (6) with 37.
There will be a men’s singles Stableford competition this weekend.
Last week’s ladies’ competition was won by Josie Collins (17) with 36 points from Agnes Fahey (23) with 34 points.
The winner of the ladies’ Monday open singles was Sue Madden (22) with 36 points.
The lady captain’s (Phil Mulkerrins) prize will be played for on this Sunday. The Monday open singles will continue and the Friday nine-hole mixed scramble will continue with a draw taking place at 5.30pm.

Portumna
IN the three Ts qualifier at Portumna at the weekend the winner was Michael Kennedy (13) with 40 points, from Kevin Power (12) with 37 and Sean Ryan (5) with 36 points. Sean Cleary (2) won the gross with 34 points, while the seniors’ section was won by Dan Hogan (12) with 35 points. 
In the ladies’ section, Annette Cahalan was the winner with 38 points, from Bríd Kelly with a similar score and Kathleen Lynch, also with 38 points. Eilee Purcell won the seniors’ section with 34 points.
The men’s open singles continues on Mondays with the seniors open on Wednesdays. The club’s annual open week will take place from July 6 to 14.

Shannon Chamber
THE annual Shannon Chamber Classic was staged at Shannon last Thursday when there was an excellent entry.
The classic is the Chamber’s biggest fundraising event and contributes greatly to enabling the Chamber’s calendar of events for members.
The molly d marketing team of Russell Ferris, Dympna O’Callaghan, Brian Polly and Aidan McNabola were the winners with 98. They had four to spare over the KPMG team of Aubrey Mulveen, Denis Connolly, Andrew Lawless and Paul Macken. In third place with 93 were Emerson (Peter Sheridan, Jason Twomey, Morgan Lewis and Liam Nolan). EI Electronics were fourth with 92 and their team members were John Gubbins, Mike Flynn, Paul Kilbridge and John Synott. In fifth spot, also with 92, were the Grant Thornton team of Eoin and Joan Hoctor, Damian Gleeson and Kevin Hogan followed by DB Schenker (Terry O’Connor, Brendan Foley, Denis McCarthy and Noel O’Loughlin with 90 with the Molex team of Pádraig Cusack, Ian Mulready John Dreelan and John Boland), also with 90.
Mark Reynolds from the Dromoland Castle team, won the long drive for men, while Russell Ferris from the winning team won the nearest-the-pin competition.
In the ladies’ longest drive competition, Joan Hoctor from the Grant Thornton team was the winner.

Haven Arms society
THE Haven Arms (Kilrush) Golf Society was formed earlier this year and on Saturday at Kilrush, the members will play for the inaugural captain’s (Pat Brennan) prize. The tee is reserved from 10.30am to 11.30am and the format will be singles Stableford.

Cranny-Coolmeen
EAST Clare was the venue last Saturday for an outing for the Cranny-Coolmeen Golf Society when 21 played. The format was a team of three and the winners, with 77 points, were Ollie McNamara, Des Murphy, Gerry Meaney, from Flan Arthur, John McKernan and Ray Shannon with 76, with third spot filled by Denis Cahill, Tom Coffey and Pat Shannon with 75 points.

Pitch and Putt
AT the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday, the competition was won by Gerry Kierce from Kevin woods with Tommy Kelly in third spot.
