No funds available to upgrade Kilrush streets

DESPITE repeated calls from Kilrush Town Councillor Stephen O’Gorman, Moore Street and Grace Street will not be resurfaced in the foreseeable future.

The deteriorating state of Moore Street, which was once the town’s primary commercial street, has been repeatedly raised at meetings of the town council.
At the May meeting, Councillor O’Gorman pressed the council for a date when resurfacing works would commence. He stressed that residents felt that the street had been forgotten about.
However, in reply, Cyril Feeney, senior executive engineer, said that funding for the restoration of Moore Street and Grace Street is the responsibility of the National Roads Authority and not Clare County Council.
“We did not receive any funding in this year’s NRA allocation for upgrade works on Moore Street,” he explained.
The NRA is responsible for the upkeep of Moore Street and Grace Street because the streets form part of the N67, which is a national secondary road.
Mr Feeney added that there are a number of other issues to be sorted out in Grace Street before any work is possible, even if the funding was available.
“There are a number of water services issues to be addressed in Grace Street, which again is subject to funding from Government departments. Until this work is complete, it is premature to discuss resurfacing works in this area. Therefore, it is not possible to give a date and time for resurfacing works to the streets,” he concluded.
