Newmarket-on-Fergus on track to retain U-16 championship title

Newmarket-on-Fergus 2-9
St Joseph’s 1-0

Newmarket-on-Fergus edged a step closer to retaining the Clare Champion U-16A Camogie title in Éire Óg on Wednesday evening when they had a 12-point win over St Joseph’s.

Newmarket’s only defeat in the competition had come at the hands of the Doora-Barefield girls. Newmarket were on the attack from the throw-in and with Rachel Kelleher in flying form, they led going in at the break.
An understrength St Joseph’s side struggled against the Newmarket midfield pairing of Niki Kaiser and Ciara Mulcaire. St Joseph’s persistence eventually paid off when they got through what had been a solid Newmarket defence and goaled. However, time was not on their side and Newmarket progressed to the final on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-0.

Ballyea were in excellent form and dominated all over the field, opening the scoring with a point from Edel Hehir in the second minute. Hehir added an impressive 3-3 in the opening half as the Kilkishen defence struggled to contain the Ballyea forwards.
Emma O’Connell’s contribution of points meant Ballyea led comfortably to Kilkishen’s solitary point at the half-time break. Weather conditions deteriorated during the second half when Hehir added a further 2-2 as the rain teemed down on the players.

Corofin 5-16
Truagh-Clonlara 0-0

Corofin progressed to the U-16C final with a great team effort at a very wet Kilkishen. Conditions were not ideal and both teams battled bravely. Corofin were better able to contend with the heavy ground and wet conditions and raced into an early lead with goals from Aoibheann Malone and Louise Browne in the opening quarter. Further goals from Shannon Kierse and Amy O’Brien gave Corofin a comfortable lead at half-time, 4-11 to 0-0.
The second half saw Truagh playing into the wind but with the deficit they had to make up, their chances of victory were slim. The Truagh-Clonlara goalie made some great saves under pressure.
