NEWMARKET-on-Fergus had a facile win over Kilkishen in the first round of the Senior Camogie Championship.
Originally scheduled to take place two weeks ago, at Fr Murphy Memorial Park on Sunday evening Newmarket were by far the dominant side. The winners had notched up 2-4 before Kilkishen registered their first score halfway through the opening half.

It was Niki Kaiser who opened the scoring for the Blues with a point, followed by a long distance effort from captain Róisín McMahon. Jenny Kelly then added 1-1 in the space of four minutes to push Newmarket ahead. A goal from Carol Kaiser and an Aine O’Brien point was added before Kilkishen’s Kate O’Gorman slotted over a free to get her side on the scoreboard.

Newmarket responded well with Carol Kaiser, Kelly and O’Brien putting over points, as O’Gorman answered with a free. Carol Kaiser and Kelly got Newmarket’s final two scores of the half. Kilkishen finished the half on a high with Lisa Loughnane scoring 1-1, to leave it 2-9 to 1-3 at the break.

A statement of intent was signalled by the victors straight after the resumption; Rachel Mulcaire finding the net with only 40 seconds gone. O’Gorman got Kilkishen off the mark with a pointed 45’ but Ruth Kaiser, with a long-range shot, raised another green flag.

Aine O’Brien got her first point of the second half to keep momentum with the home side, but Loughnane scored another goal to give her side a much needed boost. This didn’t last long though, as the county champions of 2011 got points from Deirdre Cassidy and Annmarie Hayes.

O’Gorman and Carol Kaiser swapped points before Lisa Loughnane completed her hat-trick of goals in the 13th minute. This was the last score her side would get but the victors kept ploughing ahead.

Jenny Kelly pointed and Rachel Mulcaire, following great control, hand-passed the ball to the net. O’Brien and Ruth Kaiser put over points and a fine ground stroke from Claire Arthur had Kilkishen’s Martina McNamara picking the sliothar from her goal yet again. Kelly put the ball over the bar and Cassidy, with a goal, got the last score of the game with two minutes remaining.

Newmarket have secured a semi-final spot, while Kilkishen are up against Kilmaley to see who will be joining them.

Best for the winners were Carol Kaiser, Róisín McMahon, Rachel Mulcaire, Aimee McInerney and Aine O’Brien. For Kilkishen, Lisa Loughnane was the stand-out performer, while Cushla Hehir did well and Kate O’Gorman’s accuracy from frees was important.
