Newmarket 2-19   Clarecastle 1-10

A sharper Newmarket side scored a comfortable win over Clarecastle in this Clare Champion Cup tie at noon on Saturday in Fr Murphy Park, Newmarket.

Except for a brief period midway through the second half, the winners were always in control and had their finishing been better, their winning margin would have been much greater.
The winners opened with a Colin Ryan pointed free in the first minute but two points from Derek Quinn had Clarecastle in front and suggested the Magpies might cause an upset.
That view, however, was shortlived as Newmarket took control and hit 2-8 without reply on their way to a half-time lead of 11 points (2-9 to 0-4).
The winner’s defence was never troubled as the visitors’ attack struggled to make any impression.
The margin was 12 points early in the second half when Adam Healy burst through for a Clarecastle goal. This sparked off a short revival in which Healy was central, adding three points to his goal to leave the score at 2-12 to 1-8 with 12 minutes remaining.
That was as good as it got however and seven unanswered points for the home side put the result beyond doubt.
Colin Ryan hit 0-11 for the winners, six coming from play on a day when their defence was always in control.
Adam Healy hit 1-3 for the Magpies, with Derek Quinn adding 0-6, five coming from frees.

Clooney-Quin 0-16   Clonlara  0-13

Clonlara suffered their first defeat in this season’s Clare Champion Cup campaign when they went under to Clooney-Quin at the latter’s home venue on Saturday evening.
After disappointing displays in the previous rounds, Clooney-Quin stepped up considerably and deservingly emerged with the points from this tie.
They trailed by a point at half-time, 0-6 to 0-7 but, by the mid-point of the second half, they had gone three clear. To be fair, the loss of Colm Galvin due to a leg injury didn’t help the South East Clare side’s cause.
With normal time drawing to a close, Clooney-Quin went four clear and while Clonlara tried hard to get through for the goal they needed to have a chance of maintaining their unbeaten run, all they could manage in injury time was a point.

Clooney-Quin: Damian O’Halloran; Joe O’Loughlin, Shane McNamara, Brian McInerney; Pádraig Ward, Cillian Duggan, Enda Harrisson; Donnacda Murphy, Conor Harrisson; John Earls (0-1), Mike McNamara (0-1), Peter Duggan (0-10); Mike Daffy (0-1), Seamus Conroy (0-3), John Reynolds.

Ingh-Kilnamona 1-12   Tulla 0-12

Inagh-Kilnamona trailed by four points at half-time in Dr Daly Park, Tulla, on Saturday but, with the aid of the wind in the second half, they got on top and emerged with a goal to spare. The result means Tulla remain rooted to the bottom of the league table.
The home side had the better of the first-half exchanges and led 0-10 to 1-3 at the break. The game’s only goal came from corner-forward Haulie Vaughan and proved to be an important score.
Ronan O’Looney, Tomás Kelly and Ger Arthur were prominent for the winners in this win.

Cratloe 0-19   Whitegate 0-9

Cratloe bounced back to winning ways when they had a comfortable victory over Whitegate at Cratloe on Saturday evening.
Cratloe went into the game without goalkeeper Sean Hayes, who suffered a hand injury in their game against Clonlara a week earlier. Football goalkeeper Wes De Loughrey took over between the posts but he suffered an injury early in the game and county minor player Shane Gleeson had to take over.
The winners led from the start and were 0-10 to 0-3 in front at half-time. With Liam Markham dominating at centre-back and with Sean Collins doing well at midfield, the home side got a plentiful supply of ball to their forwards, where Gearóid Ryan and Damian Browne picked off some good scores.
County minor Eoin Quirke converted a number of frees for the East Clare side but the absence of the experienced Brendan Bugler was a big blow to their hopes.

Cratloe: Dean DeLoughrey; Enda Boyce, Barry Duggan, John O’Gorman; Kevin Browne, Liam Markham, Michael Hawes; Conor Ryan, Sean Collins; Damian Browne, David O’Gorman, Gearóid Ryan; Aidan Browne, Padraig Chaplin, Barry Gleeson.
