New captains drive in at Doonbeg

There was a large turnout for captains’ (Seamus Griffin and Mary Arthur) drive in on Sunday at Doonbeg.

Photograph by Declan Monaghan The drive in was followed by a scramble that was won by the team comprising Tom O’Dea, Helen Williams, Kieran Golden and Paddy O’Grady from Michael Carrig, Aoife O’Malley, Ann Carrig and Gearóid Williams with third place filled by Liz Blake, Mary Nolan, Gerry Kelly and Diarmaid O’Donnell.
The next club competition will be on March 4.

Spanish Point

Over 50 former captains and presidents attended the first reunion of holders of these posts at Spanish Point Golf Club recently.
Last week’s winner of the senior’s open was Len Wilson (15) with a score of 39 points with second place filled by Gerry Gallagher (22) with 38 points.
The winter/spring competition last weekend was a team of three or four-stroke scramble. The winners were Mervin Hehir (16), Kevin Hynes (17) and Eric Murrihy (14) with a score of 52.2 nett.
Fixtures include an open each Friday and members this weekend will play in Scotch foursomes format with a time sheet in the clubhouse.

Dromoland
The winner of the singles competition at Dromoland at the weekend was Padraig McDaid.
In the team event, Sean Shanahan, PJ Hehir, Mark Lennon, Killian Howard and Damian Ryan were the winners from Declan O’Leary, Kieran McDermott, Martin O’Mahoney, Philip Naughton and Joe Moran. In third spot were Sean Myatt, Paul O’Brien, Niall Geraghty, Michael Flannery and Dale Foley.
This week’s format is singles Stableford.

Lahinch
Last week’s ladies singles Stableford competition was won by Barbara Foley (17) with 38 points form Teresa Felle (28) with 37 points with Maura Nolan (25) in third spot with 34 points. Kitty Morris won the gross with 24 points.
The men’s monthly medal singles strong competition on Saturday was won by Michael A Lynch (17) with 66 nett from Donal Curtin (10) with 67 nett and Michael Waters (9) with 70 nett. Peter Hennessy won the gross with 74.
In the men’s Scotch foursomes on Sunday, the winners were James (11) and Niall Collins (15) with 48 points.
In the scotch mixed foursomes on Sunday, Angela Cullinan (12) and Mark Kelly (18) were the winners with 40 points.

Kilrush
The winner of the weekly singles for the week beginning February 5 at Kilrush was James Murtagh with 28 points.
The Spring league is underway this week and round two will commence on Sunday.
There is also a weekly singles competition in progress during the Spring League with re-entry permitted.
The men’s senior captain for 2012 is Barry Taylor with Mary McNamara as the ladies senior captain. The senior ladies have an outing every Tuesday while the senior men have their weekly outing on Wednesday.

Ennis
Ennis seniors’ competition on Thursday last resulted in victory for the team of Sean Fitzpatrick, Sean O’Gorman, Jimmy McNamara and Eamon Murphy with 49 points. In second place with a similar score were Paul Mockler, Ollie Kenneally and Tim Kelly followed by Pat Cusack Tom Pilkington and Jim Hennessy with 46 points; Johnny Stack, Brian Warner and Andy Cregan with 46 points; Seamus Frehill, Tom Fox and Greg Fogarty with 46 points with sixth spot filled by Aidan Lynch, Pat Cahill and Ned Ryan.
In the men’s fourball on Sunday, the winners were Stevie Keane and Adrian Rush with 44 points from Kieran and Tom Fox who had a similar score. In third spot with 41 points were Cyril Corry and Frankie Woods.

Gort
In the men’s 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Gort at the weekend the winner was Michael Grealy with 44 points from Owen O’Donnell with 40 points, Michael Moroney with 40 points and Shane Keane with 37 points Colman Cooney won the gross with 36 points. There will be a similar competition this weekend.
Captains Frank Higgins and Regina Malone’s ‘drive-in’ took place last Sunday. The winners of the scramble run in conjunction with the drive in were John Greer, Tony Kenny and James Mulqueen with 28 nett from John Kelleher, Ray Quinn and David Kelleher on 30 nett with third spot filled by Enda Craddock, Seamus Brophy and Jim Noone on 31nett
The Ladies Spring League will continue until Tuesday, March 6.

Woodstock
The Spring League continued at the weekend when the winners of the scramble were Aidan Mulcahy, Seamus Kelly, Donal Brogan and Paul O’Shea with 53 points. The league continues this weekend when the format will be a modified fourball.
The winner of the club singles was John Dempsey (13) with 45 points.
There will be another club singles competition this weekend.

Portumna
Frank Kilkenny (10) was the winner in the 0-10 category at Portumna with 31 points. John Troy (12) won the category 11-14 with 33 points. Category C (15-18)was won by Padraic Walsh (18) with 33 points while Martin Quinn (20) won the 19 and over section with 34 points. In the seniors section, TJ O’Callaghan (28) was the winner with 31 points.

East Clare

In the men’s 14-hole fourball at East Clare, Francis Maloney (11) and Tom Larkin (20) were the winners with 42 points from Tony McNulty (13) and John Stack (18) with 38 points.
In the ladies nine-hole re-entry, Siobhán Shanahan was the winner from Brigid Minogue.
In the ladies Irish Mail qualifier, the winners were Mary Brennan and Breda O’Loughlin.
The men are having a 14-hole 2-ball scramble throughout this week.
The scoring is really hotting up in this month’s phase of the spring league with some outstanding scoring. Enda Donnellan, Jim Dunne and Brid Hayes have set a very high standard with a score of 9 under gross for 14 holes. They were closely followed last week by William O’Brien, Connie McKenna and Brigid Minogue with a score.
For February one card has to be from two ladies and one man of the three cards that will be counted.

Shannon
William O’Brien (17) was the winner of the 15-hole singles competition at Shannon last Wednesday with 37 points. The winter league is continuing this weekend.

Scariff College Classic

Scariff Community College’s annual two-day golf classic goes ahead at East Clare Golf Club on Friday and Saturday, February 24 and 25.
The format is a modified team of three scramble and tee times can be booked by contacting the pro shop at East Clare on 061 640044 or Scariff Community College at 061 921083.
Proceeds from the classic are in aid of the school pitch and running track upkeep.

Pitch and putt

Tommy Kelly was the winner of the strokeplay competition at the Clare road on Sunday last when second place was filled by Gabriel Kerin. Marty Fawl won the gross.
There will be a club meeting on this Sunday.
