KILKEE was in a very poor condition last weekend, Monday night’s meeting of Clare County Council heard.
Mayor Lily Marrinan-Sullivan said that bins hadn’t been emptied and on Monday morning county council workers were trying to do between two and three days work in just one.
She said there had been very negative feedback about the state of the place. “I walked the town and I heard comments from people who said they had never seen it as dirty,” she said.
She said that there wasn’t a car meter in operation at the East End car park, claiming it was an opportunity to try and help with poor finances, which hadn’t been taken.
Councillor Claire Haugh said she had been disturbed to see two boxes full of drink bottles left at the Strand Line.
Councillor Elaine Haugh Hayes said that while weekends are the time that people are most needed for cleaning, there isn’t anyone available.
Town manager Nora Kaye said that some issues had arisen after people were switched from working overtime for money, to a time off in lieu arrangement and a meeting on the issue is due to take place in the coming days.
Councillor Marrinan-Sullivan said it was an important issue for the economic future of Kilkee, and that the town needs to be maintained in good condition.
Councillor Karen Reilly spoke about having a spring clean-up this month and said that support would be available from Clare County Council.
