THE national senior, junior and masters ladies and men’s track and field indoor combined events plus the National Junior Championships were held at the Nenagh Indoor Arena on Saturday and Sunday and there was a fine turnout of Clare athletes.
Keith King (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) won a bronze medal in the senior multi-events pentathlon.
David Tierney, who hails from Ennistymon and competes with Leevale AC, Cork, captured the gold medal in the 56lbs for distance with a throw of 8.16m.
In the masters’ pentathlon, O-35-O-49, David Courtney (Ennis Track) and Tommy Greene (St John’s) were in action with James Sexton (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) in the quadrathlon O-50.
Courtney and Greene were first into action in the 60m hurdles with Tommy recording a time of 11.46 and David a time of 11.48. In their next event, the long jump, there was another close battle with David jumping 4.90m and Tommy clearing 4.88m. In the shot putt, Tommy Greene produced a very big throw of 11.12m with David throwing 9.30m. In the high jump, Tommy cleared 1.48m and David 1.32m. The final event was the 1,000m with David Courtney running 3.25:9 and Tommy 3.56:6. Victory went to Paul Curran (Tallaght) with David Courtney fifth and Tommy Greene sixth.
James Sexton (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) competed for the first time in the masters O-50 quadrathlon. He completed the 60m in 10.66, the long jump (3.01m), shot putt (7.46m) and the 1,000m in 3.20 to finish in fifth place.
Keith King (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) competed in the pentathlon where he had a time of 10.95 for the 60m hurdles, shot putt (10.24m), long jump (5.78m), high jump (1.74m), 1,000m (3.12) to take and the bronze medal. Gold went to Ger Cremin (An Ríocht, Kerry).
In the National Junior Track and Field Indoor Championships on Sunday, Niamh Markham (Ennis), Laura Egan (Kilmihil) and Harriett Flynn (Shannon) all contested the 1,500m final. Niamh Markham was always in contention and over the final two laps, she had to produce a very strong finish to take the bronze medal with Laura Egan having a fine run to finish fifth and Harriet Flynn sixth.
One hour later, Harriett Flynn was in the 800m final and finished a very impressive fourth.
In the junior men’s 200m, Cormac Lynch (Marian) came through the heats in flying colours and he produced a big run in the final to take the silver medal in 23.42. The gold went to Kieran Elliott (North Sligo) (22.99).
Cormac also made it through to the 60m final and finished in fourth place in 7.2.
