Musical remedy to the recession

ELEANOR Shanley, Seamus Begley, Frankie Lane, Mick Hanly and Paul Kelly will all be performing in Glór this Friday night at 8pm, in a show entitled Folk the Recession.
There will be a wonderful selection of songs by composers such as Marty Robbins, Tom Paxton, Jesse Winchester, Tommy Scott, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, Stephen Foster, Mick Hanly and Chuck Berry, combined with their own arrangements of great traditional tunes.
One of Ireland’s foremost singers, Eleanor Shanley is a native of Leitrim and is renowned for her unique interpretation of Irish and Roots songs. She has been at the top of her profession since 1989 when she appeared with De Danann and the inimitable Ronnie Drew.
She has also toured as a soloist and also with the likes of Christy Moore and Sharon Shannon, while she is in demand at top music festivals. She has recorded with the likes of Ronnie Drew, Sharon Shannon, Dolores Keane, the Dubliners, Tommy Fleming and many others.
Accordion player and singer Seamus Begley is one of the most popular traditional musicians, coming as he does from one of the most musically acclaimed Irish families. He plays with an energy that is alarming, bringing a frisky spontaneity to his box playing, belting out jigs, slides and polkas with rapid sprays of reckless ornamentation before making a sudden key change into a bitter sweet air, sung or played on the accordion.
Frankie Lane is the original front man of the legendary Fleadh Cowboys and he is one of Ireland’s best-known performers of country rock, western swing music and is also a traditional musician of international renown.
Mick Hanly is perhaps best known for Past the Point of Rescue and he is one of the country’s finest singer/songwriters. He was also lead singer with Moving Hearts back in the seventies.
Paul Kelly is a very experienced multi instrumentalist. He has performed with the Fleadh Cowboys, the Sharon Shannon band and Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, among others.
