Murphy wins president’s prize at Dromoland

THE president’s (Martin O’Mahoney) prize was played for at Dromoland at the weekend when the winner was Liam Murphy with 55 points. He pipped Tom Frawley who had a similar score. In third place, a shot further back, was Con Woods. They were followed by David Casey with 51 points and Damian Ryan with 51.

 

The gross was won by Nicky Duggan. Other prize-winners were Tom Delaney (past president) with 31 points, Noel Stapleton (handicaps 18 and over) with 36 points, Willie Fitzgerald (front nine) with 19 points, Joe Cronin (back nine) with 21 points and Jason O’Leary (student winner) with 51 points.

In the junior section, Kyle Neylon won with 41 points from Ben Mungovan on 38 points, Gordon O’Neill with 37 and Brian Meaney with 36 points.

The winner of the president’s prize to the ladies was Mary O’Donnell from Carina Roseingrave with Tina McGuire third, Cora O’Toole (fourth), Maria Nolan (fifth) and Kitty Quinn (sixth).

Dromoland PGA professional Dave Foley has qualified for the English PGA Championship, which got underway at Slaley Hall in Northumberland on Tuesday.

Kilkee

THE winner of the ladies’ competition at Kilkee at the weekend was Mary Price (34) with 39 points from Angela O’Connell (18) with 36 points.

In the men’s singles on Saturday, the winner was Eric Daly (15) with 40 points from Michael Benson (10) with 39 and Andrew O’Flynn (20) with 39.

In a similar competition on Sunday, the winner was Paul Ruschitzko (16) with 39 points from Andrew O’Flynn (20) with 37 and Michael Benson (10) with 36.

Spanish Point

THE winner of the latest round of the golfer of the year was Eoghan O’Loughlin with a score of 61 nett. In doing so, he set a new course record at five under gross. In second place was Joe O’Rourke with a score of 64 nett followed by Patrick O’Boyle with 65 nett.

The winner of the Tuesday men’s open seniors’ competition at Spanish Point was John O’Brien with a score of 36 points.

The winning team for the Friday open scramble was Sinéad Sexton’s team with a score of six under gross. Sinéad herself is making great strides with her own game and has reached a scratch handicap. This weekend there is an 18-hole team-of-three or four modified scramble.

Meanwhile, the town’s cup team has qualified for the Munster semi-final, led by their captain Martin Glenny. The Pierce Purcell team plays Charleville in Shannon this Thursday at 3.30pm in the North Munster final.
Evelyn Kelly (24) was the winner of last week’s ladies’ competition with a score of 63 nett from Yvonne O’Keeffe (28) on 72 nett. The Nozomi open day will take place on June 24 and the timesheet is available in the clubhouse, contact 065 7084198.

Woodstock

THE winner of the open singles at Woodstock last Wednesday was Ross Darmody (9) with 40 points. He had two to spare over Tom Fogarty (16) with 38. Leo Mannion (7) was third with 37.

Woodstock’s JB Carr seniors’ team travelled to Cork last week and scored a 3-2 win over Cork Golf Club in the second leg of their match. Following a 4-1 win at home in Woodstock, the Ennis-based club progress to the next round on a 7-3 score.

In the June monthly medal competition, John McBride (16) was the winner with 67 nett from Dave Fitzpatrick (17) with 69 and Paddy Vaughan (13) with 70. Kieran Cunnane (scratch) won the gross with 74.

The ladies’ singles competition on Sunday was won by Kathleen McEnery with 40 points from Teresa Sherlock with 36 points. The mixed scramble continues on Thursday evenings at 5.30pm. There will be a club singles this weekend.

Ennis

ENNIS Seniors held their Memorial Day last week and the winner of the singles competition was Charlie McEnery with 42 points from Bernard Hanrahan with a similar score. In third place with 41 points was Greg Fogarty followed by Eamon Murphy with 41, Bill Leacy with 40, Michael Cummins with 39, Peter Daly with 38 and Dick Herbert, also with 38.  The category winners were Tom Saunders with 36, Paschal Russell with 36 and Jim Felle with 37.

Captain Des Neylon’s prize to the ladies was won by Karina Doyle with 42 points from Helen Hartnett with 41, Margaret Ann Killeen with 38 and Della Burns with 38.

In the weekly 18-hole Stableford competition, the winner was Anne Kehoe with 41 points from Teresa Felle with 38 points and Ann Gallery with 36 points.

Beatrice Foley won the ladies’ open competition from Mary O’Halloran, both with 39 points.

In the ladies’ seniors’ outing last week, the winners were Phil Butler, Patricia O’Donnell and Alice Darcy from Ann Casey, Eileen McMahon and Carmel Cummins.

East Clare

THE men’s fourball winners at East Clare at the weekend were Dominic (13) and Tony Stuart (13) with 43 points each.

In the men’s seniors’ outing last week, the winners were Jim Greene, Richard Keating and Kevin Mannion from Jack Hogan, Denis Collins and Tony McNulty with third spot filled by William McLysaght, Danny Minogue and Nick Ryan.

The ladies’ competition winner was Joan Kinsella with 66 nett from Peg Hanrahan with 68 nett. The category winners were Leslie O’Flynn with 69 nett, Evelyn Skehan with 68 and Deirdre Cooney with 73 nett. The nine-hole Stableford winner was Helen Downey.

In the Friday scramble, the joint winners were Val Donnellan, Brigid Minogue, Noreen Doyle and Brendan Moloney with Donal O’Connor, Tom Larkin and Ann Culloo. In second place were John Brett, Frances Gaffney and Kathleen O’Brien.

This weekend, the men will have an 18-hole singles stroke competition off the white markers and an 18-hole singles Stableford off the yellow markers.

The men’s captain’s (Derek Kenny) prize will be played for on the week-end of June 22 and 23. Names are now being taken and there will be a draw to determine times and playing partners.

Kilrush

IN the men’s seniors’ outing at Kilrush last week, the winners were John Robinson, Tony O’Dea and Tom Prendeville with 70 points from Michael Ryan, Pat Shannon and Noel Enright with 62 points. Third spot was filled by Tom Coffey, Sean Moran and Paddy Carmody with 58 points.

The bank holiday ladies’ singles’ competition was won by Anne-Marie Donnellan with 39 points from Maura McSwiggan with 37.

In Thursday’s ladies’ singles, Mary McCarthy (22) won with 66 nett from Mary O’Sullivan (21) with 68 and Gere O’Byrne (34) with a similar score. Anne Gallagher won the gross with 86, while the nines were won by Carmel Lillis with 33 and Margaret Donnelly, also with 33.

The president’s mixed on Friday was won by John Stapleton and Stephanie Roughan from Fergal O’Shea and Maura McSwiggan with third spot filled by Jimmy McSwiggan and Kathleen O’Brien. Michael Hogan and Margaret Donnelly won the gross.

There was a big turnout for the president’s (Jimmy McSwiggan) prize on Sunday when the winner was John Robinson (23) with 41 points from Michael Studdert (17) with a similar score. Des Murphy (23) was third with 40 points followed by Joe Kelly (9) with 39 points. Jim Young junior (5) won the gross with 29 points.

The category winners were Jim Young senior (6) with 35 points, Tom Cleary (17) with 39 points and Pat Shannon, Ballynote (19) with 36 points.

Other prize winners included Declan O’Donovan (10) with 37 points (committee prize), Greg Young (5) with 34 points (past president), Billy Clarke (13) with 21 points (front 9), Michael Leonard (18) with 21 points (back nine) and Peter Lyons (13) with 36 points (guest’s prize).

In the June men’s singles on Sunday, the winner was Michael Coghlan with 40 points from John Stapleton with a similar score

The weekly mixed continues this Friday at 6.15pm, while the Fr Pat Malone team of three will be the competition on Saturday with a singles on Sunday.

On Thursday next, the ladies will play for their vice captain’s (Anne Hogan) prize.

The draw for the Hartman Cup’s mixed foursomes match play will take place shortly.

Shannon

MICHAEL McInerney’s captain’s prize will be played for at Shannon on this Friday and Saturday. The presentation of prizes will take place on Saturday night at 9.30pm.

Last week’s Wednesday open singles was won by Allan Doherty New Forest (13) with 44 points from Vincent Scully (9) with 42. Third spot filled by Seamus Conroy (17) also with 42. Paul O’Neill (scratch) won the gross with 38 points.

The lady captain’s prize to the men was won by Bryan Power (5) with 40 points from Thomas Halpin (12) with 39 and Alan Hehir (15) with 39. Ed Hickey (scratch) won the gross with 37.

In the junior scratch cup on Sunday, the winner was Darren Keane (6) (Shannon) with 148 from David O’Gorman (11) (Shannon) with 153. In third place was Nicky Ryan (5) (Woodstock) with 153 followed by Michael Allen (8) (Shannon) with 153 and Gavin O’Donnell (6) (Shannon) with 154.

Other prize winners were Ian Myatt (6) Ennis 78 (1st 18), Nigel Mann (5) Adare Manor 75 (2nd 18), Aaron Donegan (9) Woodstock with 139 (1st nett), Alan Murray (8), Adare Manor with 40 (2nd nett), Michael Sweeney (9) Ennis with 69 (1st 18), Frank Fenlon (10) Fermoy with 69 (2nd 18).

Lahinch

THE men’s singles Stableford competition for the Phelps Vase was won by Rory MacDermott (12) with 43 points from Cathal Hegarty (7) with 41 Jerry Keohane (8) with 40, John Maher (5) with 40 and James Collins (11) with 39. Mark Ryan won the gross with 35 points.

The ladies’ singles Stableford competition for the O’Loughlin Cup was won by Niamh Carey (29) with 43 points from Connie Fahy (20) with 39 points and Jenny Cagney (15) with 39 points. Elayne Hickey won the gross with 32 points. Catherine McKenna (17) won the silver section with 39 points, while Lelia Palmer (28) won the bronze section with 38.

In the men’s open singles last Thursday, the winner was Kevin Glynn (9) with 36 points from Jonathon O’Sullivan (3) with 35 and Ross Burke (13) with 34. Paul Browne won the gross with 29.

Saturday’s ladies’ singles v par was won by Sheena Mannion (25) with six-up from Elizabeth Abernethy (15) with a similar score. Miriam Abernethy (8) was third with a score of level, while Valerie Hassett (8) won the gross with six down.

In the men’s singles on Saturday, the winner was Dan O’Donovan (10) with 41 points from Martin Moroney (13) with 40 and Michael Waters (9) with 39. Gerard Dunworth won the gross with 32 points.

The Kilcoran House and Pretoria Cups were played for on Sunday. Eamonn Connaire (9) won the Kilcoran House Cup with 70 nett from Cathal Hegarty (6) with a similar score and Peter Hennessy (4) with 71.

The winner of the Pretoria Cup was Darragh McDonagh (17) with 72 from Roger Derham (14) with 74 and Denis Cullinan (13) with 74.

Portumna

MICHAEL Coniry and Caroline Carr are top qualifiers in Suzanne Corcoran’s president’s prize competition at Portumna. Fifty-four players have qualified for an 18-hole play-off on this Sunday, June 16 when there will be a shotgun start at 1.30pm. All competitors are requested to be in the clubhouse by 12.45pm on the day of the play-off.

The three Ts ladies and gents qualifying competition takes place on Sunday, June 23.

Gort

OPEN week got underway at Gort at the weekend when the winner of the singles competition was Lawrence O’Loughlin (13) with 43 points from Eanna Melville (9) who had a similar score and Sean Hanbury (13) who had 40 points. David Quirke (4) won the gross with 33 points. 

Competitions continue throughout the week up to and including this Sunday.

Last week’s ladies’ 18-hole stroke medal competition was won by Gabrielle Warnock (23) with 68 from Bernie Browne (36) with 73 and third Ann Nolan (30), also with 73.

Castletroy scratch cup

THE Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup, (Major HK Murray) the oldest scratch cup still being played, was won in great style last week by Eddie McCormack (Galway). Eddie shot two great rounds of golf with a 69 in the morning and 75 in the evening.

Eddie has now claimed the 66th staging of the cup and joins a list on the role of honour which includes Jimmy Bruen, Joe Carr, Des Smyth, Tom Craddock and David Sheehan.

The field included 28 golfers of scratch or better, which is a great tribute to the event.

Ed Hickey of Shannon shot a superb round of 67 in the morning and his duel with Eddie McCormack in the afternoon was keenly contested. Keith Crowley of Fota Island finished three shots behind the winner in second place with Hickey third, also on 146.

Andy Boyle (Ashbourne) won the nett category from Mike Kemmy (Limerick), John Hickey (Cork), Shane Hogan (Nenagh) and Bob Loftus (Lahinch).

Sixmilebridge

SIXMILEBRIDGE society will hold an outing to Nenagh this Saturday when the tee will is reserved from 11am.

Pitch and Putt

KENNETH Kerin was the overall winner in the Dormer Cup competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. Marty Fawl won the senior section with the intermediate title going to Billy Griffin and the junior award to Paddy Sheedy.
