Munster gold for six Clare athletes

THE Munster juvenile U-9, U-10, U-11 2 x 2 team events plus boys’ and girls’ U-12 and U-13 track and field championships wereheld over two days in sweltering heat at Lees Road. Clare athletes came away with eight gold, five silver and ten bronze medals.

Susan Nestor (St Mary’s) won double gold on day one in the girls’ U-11. She stormed around the track and led from gun to tape to take the 600m, while she also produced three big jumps to take the long jump in 6.01m.

Ben Whelehan (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare), competing in the boys’ U-12 600m, pulled away on the home straight to win the gold medal with a very fast time of 1.45:72.

On day two, another U-12 athlete, Conor Blake (St John’s), competing in the high jump, won gold with a jump of 1.39m, which narrowly failed to beat the championship record.
