Munster championships marks Ennis club’s 125th milestone

SPORTING history unfolded in Ennis at the weekend when the town hosted the finals of the Munster close badminton championships for the first time. This is one of many events this year to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of Ennis Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club.

The results which involved Ennis players were:
U-13
Girls’ singles:
winner, Sarah Pingree (Gurteen); runner-up Alexandra Troy (Ennis).
Girls Doubles: winners, Sarah Pingree (Gurteen) and Eadaoin Coghlan (Carrigaline); runner-up Alexandra Troy (Ennis) and Katie Browne (Ennis).
U-15
Boys’ doubles:
winners, Brian and Cian O’Mahony (St Mary’s); runner-up Lyndon Fairbrother (Templemore) and Maurice Molloy (Ennis).
Girls singles: winner, Moya Ryan (Ennis); runner-up Karen MacNamara (Ennis).
Girls doubles: winners, Karen MacNamara (Ennis) and Lana Browne (Ennis); runner-up Moya Ryan (Ennis) and Alexandra Troy (Ennis).
Mixed doubles: winners, Moya Ryan (Ennis) and Cian O’Mahony (St Mary’s); runner-up Lana Browne (Ennis) and Brian O’Mahony (St Mary’s).
U-17
Girls singles:
winner, Ciara Dwyer (Ennis); runner-up Megan Bredin (Ennis).
Girls Doubles: Winners, Moya Ryan (Ennis) and Megan Bredin (Ennis); runner-up Louise Sexton (Lady Lane) and Ciara Dwyer (Ennis).
Mixed doubles: winners, Ciara Dwyer (Ennis) and Sean Howard (Dromtariffe); runner-up Moya Ryan (Ennis) and Cian O’Mahony (St Mary’s).

Celebratory dinner

A 125th anniversary dinner dance will be held in the Old Ground on Saturday, July 13. Tickets are available from sodonovan@eircom.net or Siobhán at 087 6605226. A book on the club’s history will be launched the previous night, also at the Old Ground. A tennis tournament and BBQ will also be held on the same weekend.
Meanwhile, the club is undergoing major improvements at present in preparation for this special weekend.
