ST Joseph’s Spanish Point pupil Tara Comber, who achieved 11 As in her 2012 Junior Certificate exams, has been invited to take part in the Irish EU Science Olympiad on October 27 at Dublin City University.

If Tara is selected to compete for Ireland in the European Union Science Olympiad, she will travel to Luxembourg next March.

“I was delighted. It was the kind of thing I was aiming for,” Tara, who is from Mullagh, told The Clare Champion on hearing of her selection for the national finals.

She was informed by letter on Monday from Dr Paraic James and Dr Odilla Finlayson from the School of Chemical Sciences at Dublin City University. “Science is my favourite subject and I hope to do physics, chemistry and biology for my Leaving Cert. I’d like to thank my science teacher Ms Gammell and my science teacher Ms Garfield,” she added.

St Joseph’s Spanish Point school principal Mary Crawford said Tara was selected because of the excellence of her results in maths and science subjects.

“Because Tara was such a high achiever in maths and science, she was selected as one of a group of students to go to Dublin for the Irish Junior Science Olympiad,” the school principal explained.
