Morey a doubt for Waterford clash

Seadna Morey is a major doubt for Clare’s first round Munster Senior Hurling Championship game with Waterford on Sunday week.

The Sixmilebridge man was, obviously, in some discomfort while playing for his club against Clarecastle in last Saturday’s  Clare Senior Championship first-round game. He also sat out training on Tuesday evening when the squad re-grouped, having been with their clubs for the previous week.

Morey, one of the stars in Clare’s All-Ireland U-21 title win last year, picked up the injury during a training weekend in Lahinch with the county squad three weeks ago.

“Panellists Aaron Cunningham and Jamie Shanahan are definitely out of the Waterford game,” selector Mike Deegan confirmed this week. Both are recovering from shoulder injuries and should be back challenging for places  in the coming weeks.

Cratloe man Deegan confirmed, “All squad members came through the weekend club games without injury”. In addition to Morey, Cathal McInerney didn’t train on Tuesday due to ’flu.

This Thursday, Clare will play Anthony Daly’s Dublin in a challenge game at a Tipperary venue yet to be confirmed.

It’s expected that the Clare management will name a team that will be near to those who are likely to face Waterford on Sunday week. Cian Dillon, who returned to action in recent weeks, is expected to feature in the tie but it remains to be seen if the Crusheen man will be named in the starting line-up for Sunday week.

There is speculation that he could be named in the full-back line, releasing Seadna Morey, if fit, for duty further afield. Morey played most of the league campaign at corner-back but many argue that he will be of greater benefit to the team as a midfielder, where he lined out for his club last weekend.
