Moloney drives-in as new Ennis seniors captain

AFTER new captain Willie Moloney’s drive-in on Thursday last, Ennis Seniors held a three-ball scramble over 15 holes. Winners with 49.9 points were Peadar Cosgrove, Ollie Kenneally and Jim McMahon from Pat McGuire, Charlie McEnery and Eamon Murphy on 50.7.
In third spot were Dick Herbert, Dickie Pyne and Michael Cummins with 51 followed by Frank Landy, Johnny Guerin and Michael Kenny. In fifth spot were Johnny Cullinan, Noel Pilkington and Bobby Burke followed by Pat Cusack, Paddy Cahill and Tom Greene.
In seventh spot were Paddy Lane. Larry O’Farrelly and Tom Pilkington followed in eighth spot by Sean O’Gorman, Dave Timlin and Michael Butler with ninth position filled by Michael Nunan, Michael Connolly and George Dilger.
In the men’s four-ball competition on Sunday, John Guilfoyle and Johnny Cullinan were the winners with 41 points from Brian O’Gorman and David Rushe with 40 with third spot filled by John Kelly and George Mulvey with 40 points.

Spanish Point

OPEN competitions for seniors continue every Tuesday at Spanish Point and the winter/spring open day on Fridays is now back on the fixture list. Last weekend’s competition was a team of 3/4 rumble (one score on front nine and two scores on back nine) and was won by Derry Waldron (20), Carl O’Neill (28), Harry Crowe (17) and Seamus McMahon (15) with 72 points. Next weekend’s competition will be a four-ball and timesheets are in the clubhouse.

Lahinch

AARON McNulty (5) won the men’s monthly medal singles stroke competition at Lahinch on Saturday with 69 nett. Jim Young (6) was second with a similar score, while Walter O’Brien (12) was in third spot with 70 nett.
Sunday’s four-ball Stableford competition was won by Ronan (3) and Brian Cooney (11) with 42 points from Aidan O’Driscoll (10) and Dan O’Donovan (11) with 40 points.
Over the next number of weeks, additional drainage work will take place on the Castle Course to facilitate the removal of surface water.
Subject to the availability of the Castle Course, the old course will close on Monday, February 6 to facilitate essential course maintenance work. The course will reopen for play on Friday, March 2.
The annual Latymon Trophy will take place on Saturday, February 4.

East Clare

THE winner of the men’s 14-hole competition at East Clare was John Stack (18) with 35 points from Brendan Foley (10) with a similar score with third spot filled by Martin Mason (18) with 34 points.
In the ladies’ team event, the winners were Breda O’Loughlin, Anna McGillicuddy, Noreen Doyle and Pat Williams from Catherine Minogue, Mary Collins and Margaret Lynch.
The winners of the men’s seniors outing were Brendan Moloney, Steve Symes and Chris Davis from Liam Nolan, Gerry O’Brien and Kevin Mannion with third spot filled by John Fielding, Michael Drew and Kieran Gibbons.
In the ladies’ seniors outing, the winners were Mary Collins and Georgina Wright.
This weekend, there will be a 14-hole four-ball for the men, while the ladies will have another nine-hole re-entry competition.

Dromoland

THE winner of the singles Stableford competition at Dromoland was Pádraig McDaid with 39 points from John Collins 37 points and Philip Naughton with a similar score. Sean Shanahan, with 39 points, won the junior section.
The winners of the scotch foursomes were Mick O’Shea and Michael Flannery who beat Brian Sheedy and Killian Duggan in the final.
The winter leagues commenced this week.

 

Doonbeg
DOONBEG society had its biggest turnout on Sunday for the outing to the local links course. Pat O’Malley was an impressive winner with 42 points from Derek Garvey on 35, Kieran Golden on 35 and Kevin Harte on 33. The nines were won by Nigel Dillon and Pakie O’Dea, while the ladies’ section was won by Helen Williams from Maureen Kinnerk.

Woodstock
ENTRIES for the men’s spring league at Woodstock are now being accepted and should be placed in the competition’s box with contact number and entry fee.
The league will be played over six weeks and the draw will be made on Friday, February 3. The competition will start on the weekend of February 11 and 12
In the weekly seniors’ competition over 15 holes, Tom Dormer was the winner with 32 points.
In the club singles at the weekend PJ Carmody (11) won category A with 35 points. Frank Meaney (16) won category B with 36 points, while Thomas Barrett (18) won category C with 36 points.

Shannon
MIKE (6) and Robbie Corry (13) were the winners of the men’s 15-hole fourball at Shannon at the weekend with 42 points. They had one to spare from Ronan (6) and Alan Hehir (16) who were followed by Eoghan O’Dea (6) and Declan Carmody (17) with 40 points, John Garry (13) and Tim Crowe (2) with 39 points, Jim Fitzgerald (9) and Dermot Finnan (15) with 39 points.
In the Wednesday singles, Fintan Ward (8) was the winner with 36 points from Jerry Walsh (20) who had a similar score.

Gort
IN the men’s singles competition at Gort at the weekend, Joe Geoghegan was the winner with 40 points from Declan Flaherty on 39, Ray Quinn on 39 and John  Rodgers on 37. Colman Cooney won the gross with 29 points.
There will be a singles competition this weekend.
In the ladies’ section, the spring league is ongoing until the beginning of March.

Portumna
MATT Donoghue (7) was the winner of the 14-hole voucher Stableford competition for the 0-10 handicappers at Gort with 33 points. Other prize winners were Dermot Egan (14) with 31 points in the 11-14 category, Enda Quigley (18) with 34 points in the 15-19 category, Martin McDonagh (22) with 30 points in the 19 and over category and John Kennedy (15) with 31 points in the seniors section.
Entries are now being taken for the ladies spring league.
The captains’ (Ena Moran and Frank Ryan) and president’s (Mike Carty) drive-in will take place on Sunday, February 5 at 12 noon.

Cranny-Coolmeen
THE Cranny-Coolmeen society held a team-of-four scramble at Spanish Point recently when the winners were Tommy Coffey, Brendan McNamara, Gerry McMahon and Una Doyle. In second place were Ollie McNamara, Denis Cahill, Michael McMahon and Pat Murtagh and they were followed by Gerry Bredin, Robert McMahon, Pat Conway and Paul Kenny.
The society held its AGM later that evening, where Tommy Coffey was named as the golfer of the year followed by Pat Shannon in second place and Ollie McNamara in third spot.
The meeting elected Agnes Shannon as the captain for 2012 with Michael McMahon elected to the role of president. 

Pitch and putt
GABRIEL Kerin was the winner of the strokeplay competition at the Clare Road club on Sunday when Denis McElligott was second, Marty Fawl won the gross.
