Mollie wins the hearts of the country

AN East Clare border collie has stolen the heart of the nation.
Mollie was among eight finalists in the national competition which was run in conjunction with 2FM for World Animal Week and beat stiff competition to be crowned as the country’s best-loved dog. 
Mollie and her owner, Samantha Morrissey, live in Clonrush, Whitegate, where Mollie is somewhat of a celebrity. She has overcome some obstacles in her six years. She was rescued by Samantha from the GSPCA where she was given a loving home but tragically was struck by a car leaving her without the use of her back legs. Against the odds, the border collie leads a full and happy life thanks to a life changing device, her trolley.
Since Mollie has been in her trolley, which acts as a wheelchair, she has created a stir and her fame has grown even further since she took up surfing the internet, as Mollie’s You Tube clips and her Facebook page is reaching a wide and varied audience across the globe.
Speaking about Mollie’s win, Samantha said, “We are thrilled. It is a really good way of creating awareness for disabled dogs and I’m thrilled she has got this. It was such a sad thing that happened to her and I’m glad that something good has come out of it. People’s reaction has been very positive.” 
Samanthasaidher dog also gives hope to other pet owners.
“Every dog is different and a trolley might not suit them because it’s not always straight-forward but it gives hope. Since her You Tube video, people do email and ask us about Mollie’s trolley.
“I’ve been in touch with vets too, so Molly is helping other pet owners. It is hard for people when something happens their pet but Mollie shows it doesn’t have to be the end of the road,” Samantha added.
Following her national win, Mollie has received cards of congratulations, her Facebook page has received a number of posts of good wishes, while her You Tube clip has reached over 4,000 views. Mollie won a six-month supply of Pedigree Chum, a photo shoot and a getaway break for her and her owner in Barna County Galway.
Samantha acknowledged the huge support Mollie got locally and from further afield which lead to Mollie being crowned Ireland’s Best Loved Dog.
“It was mostly achieved through the support we got. People really rallied around and voted for her. It was amazing to win and we got lovely messages from people all over the world,” Samantha concluded.
