Moher Celtic were crowned U-17 Cup champions at the County Grounds in Doora at the weekend when they won a penalty shoot-out with Newmarket Celtic.
The sides were scoreless at the end of normal time and extra-time.
Both did create a number of scoring chances but good defences allied to some poor shooting meant there were no goals from open play.
Defences were generally on top but Moher had two great chances. They were awarded a penalty as early as the fifth minute but Sean Noonan’s effort was saved by Cathal Finnucane in the Newmarket goal. Later in the first half of extra-time, David Davenport saw his effort rebound off the upright.
In the shoot-out, Keith Sexton gave the new champions the lead while Newmarket also scored their first when Killian Howard was on target.
Michael Davenport was next up for the winners and he scored before Newmarket’s Cathal Hayes saw his effort saved by Darren Nagle.
Moher’s Shane Doyle then saw his effort saved by Cathal Finnucane and when John Feehily scored for Newmarket, the teams were level at 2-2.
Aidan Davidson was next up for the North Clare side and he scored before goalkeeper Nagle saved from Newmarket’s Paraic McMahon.
Fifteen-year-old Kieran Buckley sparked off wild celebrations among followers of the North Clare side when he cooly slotted the final penalty to seal the game.
After the game, Moher captain Cathal Nagle received the cup from Oliver Fitzpatrick.
