Mixtape mixes it up this weekend

NEW and exciting music from all around the country is set to be showcased by the ClareYouth Service’s Music Project when they present Mixtape later this month.
Mixtape is an all-ages live event which will take place in Glór on Friday from 6pm to 8pm. The gig will feature performances from Limerick’s windings, Scariff’s The Mustang Hobo, local emerging trad fusion group GnT plus local DJs spinning in between.
This intimate event will provide a platform for alternative bands, DJs, producers and artists to present their work in a unique environment, with elements of visual projections, improvisation and music technology being pushed to the fore. This is a drug and alcohol-free event.
The windings story started in 2005, when Steve Ryan (neé Steveamanakick) released the self-titled debut album on Out on a Limb Records, to a multitude of positive reviews from music media and fans alike and invitations to perform at many festivals including Electric Picnic. Three years later, long-time collaborator and friend, Liam Marley, became a fully fledged member of the band. 2009 saw the arrival of a further three winders – Aaron Mulhall taking on drum duties, with Patrick O’Brien and Mike Gavin on guitars/keyboards/glockenspiels/kitchen sinks.
Windings have had a pleasantly busy 2010.
The band released two critically embraced singles (Brain Fluid and Old Like J) and toured extensively throughout the former half of the year, playing with bands such as Iron And Wine, Daniel Johnston, Modest Mouse, Teenage Fanclub, and The Cranberries along the way. Windings then travelled abroad, returning refreshed from The Big Apple where they played the famous Bowery Club as part of the Music from Ireland showcase at the CMJ Music Festival in New York. Not ones to rest on their laurels, upon their return in October, they released It’s Never Night, the long-awaited follow up to the eponymous 2005 debut.
The gig will be followed by a showing of the film Exit Through the Gift Shop directed by acclaimed British artist Banksy. The film tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant in Los Angeles, and his obsession with street art. The film charts Guetta’s constant documenting of his every waking moment on film, from a chance encounter with his cousin, the artist Invader, to his introduction to a host of street artists with a focus on Shepard Fairey and Banksy, whose anonymity is preserved by obscuring his face and altering his voice, to Guetta’s eventual fame as a street artist himself. The film premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. It is narrated by Rhys Ifans. The music is by Geoff Barrow. It includes Richard Hawley’s Tonight The Streets Are Ours. [1] The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 83rd Academy Awards. There is a special entry price for the CYS event and film.
