A NEW visitors’ website, www.visitmilltownmalbay.ie will be launched by Harry Hughes, administrative director of Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, at a céilí mór and dance in the community hall, Miltown Malbay, on Saturday at 9.30pm.
The website, which highlights the Clare town’s reputation as the home of traditional Irish music, also draws attention to the many other attractions offered by the town and its hinterland and invites the visitor to choose Miltown Malbay as the ideal base for a holiday in the west and north of the county.
For many years, Miltown Malbay has been synonymous with traditional Irish music. Some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians and singers have lived in the town. Willie Clancy, Junior Crehan, Scully and Bobby Casey, Martin Talty, Jimmy Ward and Ollie Conway were all natives of the area and are household names throughout the world of folk music and song.
This wealth of history has attracted many more musicians to settle in Miltown, ensuring great music sessions all year round. The first week in July is marked annually by Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, the world-renowned summer school that celebrates traditional music, dance and song. The school’s master classes and concerts attract the most accomplished traditional artistes from all parts of the world, with a cosmopolitan mix spilling out into the streets and pubs of the town.
The Four Courts Céilí Band from north Clare will provide the music at the launch of www.visitmilltownmalbay.ie. Tickets are on sale locally.
