Mid-West Alliance final on Sunday


THE final round of the Mid-West Alliance will take place this Sunday at Dromoland. Reigning champion, Dromoland professional, Dave Foley, is two shots behind Tony Cleary going into the final round. Both are members of the host club.

Ennis
ENNIS seniors’ group held a team-of-four competition, in which 84 competed last Thursday when the winners returned 83 points. They were Paddy Cahill, Michael Finn, Pierce Cahill and Tony Kehoe. They were followed on 81 points by Johnny Cullinan, Sean O’Gorman, Frank Landy, and Jimmy McNamara.
In third spot on 79 points were Tom Pender, Tom Duggan, Tony Coote, and TJ Kerins followed by Maurice Walshe, Michael Cummins, Michael Connolly and Pat O’Reilly on 78; Jimmy Kearns, Conor Murphy, John O’Loughlin and Tom Fox on 78; Luke Coote, Tim Kelly, Pat Cusack and Pat McGuire on 76 and Paddy Lane, Ferdie O’Donoghue, Johnny Stack and Brian Warner on 75.

Lahinch

IN the men’s singles Stableford competition at the Castle course on Saturday, Don Dillon (13) was the winner with 45 points from Gerry O’Mahony (9) on 40 and Declan McInerney (1) on 39.
Conail Haugh (17) was the winner of Sunday’s singles with 43 points from Eugene Judge (8) with 42 points and Tom Holly (21) with 41 points.
Marjorie Ahern (12) and Maire Hanrahan (23) were the winners of Sunday’s ladies’ four-ball Stableford with 37 points.

Dromoland

KIERAN McDermott was the overall individual winner at Dromoland at the weekend.
In the team league, the winning team comprised Declan O’Leary, Kieran McDermott, Martin O’Mahoney, Philip Naughton and Joe Moran from Sean Shanahan, PJ Hehir, Mark Lennon, Killian Howard and Damien Ryan. In third place were Sean Myatt, Paul O’Brien, Niall Geraghty, Michael Flannery and Dale Foley.
The final week of the league is this week and the format will be singles Stableford.

Spanish Point

THE seniors’ open was well supported at Spanish Point last week and the scoring reflected the fine day. While there were a number of scores in the high 30s, the clear winner with a splendid score of 42 points was John O’Brien (15). In second place, on count-back, was John Stapleton (18) Kilrush with 38 points.
The team of two scramble last weekend was won by Eoghan O’Loughlin (3) and Brendan Sexton (14) who left the rest of the field behind with 54.75 nett.
This weekend is the annual men’s club fundraising team competition, which is open on Saturday and Sunday and timesheets are in the clubhouse.

Portumna

THE 14-hole Stableford competition attracted another good entry at Portumna on Sunday when Albert Kelly (8) won category 0-10 with 33 points, Ger Brehony (12) won category 11-14 with 31 points, John Cormican (18) won category 15-18 with 32 points, Ollie Rooney (19) won category 19 and over with 33 points and Tony Cummins (21) won the seniors section with 34 points.
In the ladies’ competition, also over 14 holes, the winner was Kathleen Lynch (16) with 31 points from Ann Cassidy (4) with 26 points.
Portumna will host an open father-and-son fourball on Good Friday, April 6, and a timesheet is in operation.
Commencing on Easter Monday, April 9, there will be an open day on Mondays.

Woodstock

THE captains, Anne Marie Russell and Jim Carmody, will drive-in for 2012 at Woodstock on this Sunday at 2.30pm followed by a nine-hole scramble. Incoming president James Meade and seniors’ captain Eugene Phillips will also drive-in on Sunday.
The competition in week three of the spring league was a modified scramble and the winners were Ross Darmody (8), Tony Neville (12), Colm Cooney (16) and Ciarán Gallagher (22) with 58 points from Hugh McGrath (9), Tom Hanrahan (9), Brian J Aherne (15) and Brendan Keogh (19) who had a similar score. The winner of the club singles was Ken Horgan (10) with 45 points.
The league continues this week and the format will be four-ball better ball. There will also be a club singles.

Gort

NIALL Gillane was the winner of the men’s singles at Gort at the weekend with 45 points from Sean Hanbury on 44 points, Bernard Byrne with 41 points and Aidan Cafferkey with 40 points. David Quirke won the gross with 32 points.
There will be another singles competition this weekend.
The ladies’ spring league is continuing until next Tuesday. The spring league final will be on Sunday, March 11.

East Clare
IN the men’s 14-hole singles at East Clare at the weekend, the winner was Teddy O’Hanlon (14) with 37 points from Tim McNamara (14) with 35 points, with third spot filled by Pat McKenna (11), also with 35 points.
In the men’s seniors competition, the winners were Tony McNulty and Kevin Grimes from Brendan Moloney and Steve Symes with third spot filled by Liam Nolan and Michael Drew.
In the ladies’ 14-hole singles, Sue Casey was the winner from Catherine Minogue, with Nancy Starr in third spot.
There will be an 18-hole four-ball betterball competition this weekend. The March phase of the winter league is an team-of-three waltz competition.

Shannon

IN the ladies’ 15-hole competition at Shannon last week, Eileen McNamara (23) with 39 points was the winner from Christina Halpin (24) with 38 points and Jean Murphy-Wright (9) with 37 points.
The men’s 15-hole fourball competition was won by Colm O’Flynn (5) and Pat Madden (14) with 43 points from Adrian Treacy (18) and Barry O’Riordan (18) with 41 points. In third spot were Seamus Twomey (13) and Jim Fleming (15) with 40 points.
In the men’s winter league final, the winners were Fintan Ward’s team (Fintan Ward, Colm Egan, James Bullman, Kieran Carmody, Mal Roberts, and Malcom Simpson). They defeated Pádraig Cahilane’s team  by three matches to nil.

Kilrush

IN week two of the spring league at Kilrush, Michael Hogan’s team won with 167 points from Pat Murtagh’s team on 161 points and Pat Brennan’s team on 156 points.
Week four of the league commences this Sunday. The play-off is set for Sunday, March 18 and will be followed by the presentation.
In last week’s seniors outing, the winners were Jim McSwiggan, John Stapleton and John Robinson from TJ Lyons, Noel Cooney and Paddy Carmody with third spot filled by PJ Maher, Leo Harvey, Barry Taylor and Tom O’Dea.
On Wednesday, Kilrush will host a round of the Clare-Galway winter league, with the tee reserved from 9am to 1pm.

Doonbeg Society

DEREK Garvey was the winner of the Doonbeg Society outing to Spanish Point on Saturday with 38 points. He won by one from Seanie Moloney with Tom O’Dea in third spot on 36 points. The nines were won by Denis Nagle and Nigel Dillon. Geraldine Burke won the ladies’ section from Liz Blake.
The society’s next outing will be to Galway Bay. This will be a two-day event on April 21 and 22.

Scariff College

A SUCCESSFUL outing in aid of pitch and track development at Scariff Community College was held in East Clare Golf Club last week when the format was a team-of-three modified scramble.
The winners were Sean Tuohy, Paul Hayes and Michael O’Halloran with 104 points and they had three to spare over Brendan Maloney, Val Donnellan and Sean Jones. In third place, also on 101 points, were Seamus O’Dwyer, Tony McNulty and John Farrell followed by Dick O’Connell, Seamus Frehill and Sean Daly with 100 points.

Pitch and putt
THE winners of the county board scramble at the Clare Road on Sunday last were Mary Murphy and Tony Clancy. The gross was won by Marty Fawl and Billy Griffin.
This week’s competition will be the Mickey Kerin Shield.
