Meehan to head up Trócaire

KILMALEY man Eamonn Meehan has been appointed as the new executive director of Trócaire, the overseas Catholic development agency. He succeeds Justin Kilcullen who is due to retire in October.

Mr Meehan, a past pupil of St Flannan’s College, has worked with Trócaire since 1991 and served as deputy director since 2002.

The Irish charity works to overcome the challenges of poverty and injustice in some of the world’s poorest places such as South Africa, Mozambique, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The agency works in 28 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Deputy Pat Breen, chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, who knows Eamon in a personal and professional capacity, believes he is an excellent choice for the position.

“I know Eamonn well as we went to school together in St Flannan’s. He brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as deputy director of the organisation since 2002.

“I have had the opportunity to see the work initiated by Trócaire in the areas of humanitarian rights and poverty reduction. I am strong supporter of Trócaire’s long term development programmes and I am very much aware of the enormous contribution the charity makes in improving the lives of some of the poorest people in the world,” he said.
