A CLARE student was the winner of a prestigious student media award this week.
Colm Flynn won the Oxygen.ie National Student Media award for TV production of the year at the Mansion House in Dublin on Wednesday night.
The event was attended by more than 600 students and national media personalities including hosts Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí Ó Sé, broadcaster George Hook, Paul Williams of The News of the World, Samantha Libreri of RTÉ and 2fm’s DJ Ruth Scott.
Ennis man Colm, a student at IT Tallaght, picked up the award for his production Chernobyl Children, an engaging story of life for children hit by this disaster.
The 22-year-old made the once-off documentary when the opportunity arose to travel with a group of Irish volunteers to Ukraine and Belarus.
Colm is not new to the media scene and was the station manager of ITT Fm in Tallaght last year. He also presented shows for Clare FM for a number of years and now hopes to forge a career as a TV presenter and producer.
Colm was described by this year’s category judge Samantha Libreri as being “highly skilled in all areas of TV production”, adding that the documentary could be aired on national television.
