Medal haul at indoor championships

The Munster Juvenile U-14. to U-19 Indoor Track and Field Championships were held at the Nenagh Indoor Arena last Saturday and Sunday.
On day one, Clare athletes started off in fine style bringing home six gold, four silver, and 12 bronze medals.
Alex O’Neill, St Cronan’s, took gold in the girls U-14 800m and Gearóid McMahon, Shannon, won gold in the boys U-14 1,000m walk. Katie Taylor, St Cronan’s, won gold in the girls U-15 long jump and Caoimhie Harvey, St John’s, clinched the gold in the 800m U-15.
In both the U-16 high jump and shot putt Derbhile Ryan, Clonlara and Nenagh AC, won gold while Laura Power, Ennis Track, won gold in the U-18 800m and Niamh Markham Ennis Track captured gold in the U-19 800m.
On day two the medal haul increased with three more gold medals added to the tally along with 11 silver and two bronze.
Angharad Loughnane, Marian, took home gold in the girls U-15 1,000m walk, and Niamh Markham, Ennis Track, won gold in the 400m.
In the girls U-14. 800m two Clare girls reached the final, Alex O’Neill, St Cronan’s, and Emer Keane Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare and on the third lap O’Neill drove hard over the final 200m to claim this title in fine style with a time of 2.32.69.
In the boys U-14 Gearóid McMahon, Shannon, produced a great performance in the 1,000m walk with a championship best time of 5.17.00 to win the gold medal.
Tony Odubuto, Ennis Track, won a bronze medal in the boys’ U-14 60m hurdles. On day two he won silver in the long jump with a leap of 5.01m and a win in the 60m.
In the girls U-15 800m, three Clare girls reached the final – Aishling Kelly and Caoimhe Harvey, St John’s and Elaine Shannon, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare. Harvey had to work hard on the final bend to take the gold medal in 2.25.89 with the bronze medal going to Aisling Kelly, who had a nasty fall in the heats
Angharad Loughnane, Marian, competed in the U-15 1,000m walk and she went into an early lead to dominate this event and win comfortably with a time of 5.20.94. She also came away with a silver medal in the shot putt with a throw of 10.36m.
Kate Taylor, St Cronan’s, and Anna Courtney, Marian, produced outstanding jumping in the girls U-15 long jump with Taylor taking the gold medal with a leap of 4.57m. Anna Courtney with a leap of 4.42m was third.
In the boys U-15 800m two Clare athletes came through the heats, Eoin Looney and Patrick O’Rourke, both Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare.
In the final, Looney took control on the first lap with Patrick O’Rourke back in sixth position with two laps remaining. When the bell went for the final lap Looney was back in third spot and began his move on the final bend to get up for the silver medal and a personal best time of 2.13.30, with O’Rourke coming home seventh in 2.32.24.
In the U-17 girls there was double gold for Derbhile Ryan, Clonlara and Nenagh AC, winning the high jump with a leap of 1.62m with Rachel Clancy, St John’s, taking the bronze medal in 8.59m.
Ryan won the shot putt with a throw of 10.79m and Clancy was also the runner-up in this competition.
On Sunday, Ryan captured a bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 4.66m.
Shannon O’Grady, Shannon, won a bronze medal in the 1,500m walk with a time of 10.23.07.
In the boys U-17 long jump Padraig McNamara, Marian, and Kaderi Kadrumi, Ennis Track, got to the final jump-off. Over the final three rounds, Kadrumi snatched the bronze medal with a leap of 5.67m with McNamara fourth (5.52m).
Ronan Barry and Padraig McNamara contested the high jump with Barry taking the silver medal with a leap of 1.65m and McNamara, Marian, fourth with 1.60m.
In the boys U-17 800m Noah McMahon, Ennis Track, had to settle for the silver medal.
Muireann O’Shea, Marian, Laura Power, Ennis Track, and Róisín Considine, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, contested the finals of the girls U-18 800m.
With two laps remaining it was a battle for the Munster title between these three. Power made her break on the back straight and powered her way home to take the gold medal in (2.31.34) from Considine (2.32.49) and O’Shea (2.33.42).
In the girls U-18 high jump Jessica O’Connor, Marian won a silver medal with a leap of (1.45m).
Laura Power, Ennis Track, and Nollaig Blake, St John’s, contested the 1,500m final with Power taking a silver medal in 5.17.08 and Blake in fourth spot.
Shane McGrath, Shannon, reached the final of the boys U-18 long jump and he came away with a bronze medal with a leap of 4.88m.
In the boys U-18 shot putt Seamus McMahon, Shannon, won a silver medal with a throw of 10.43m.
In the girls U-19 section, two Clare athletes contested the 800m, Niamh Markham, Ennis Track, and Eimear Hillery, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare. With three of the four laps complete Markham sprinted clear over the final 50m to take the gold medal in 2.20.68 with Emer Hillery finishing fourth.
She went on to the high jump where she captured the silver medal with a leap of 1.45m and, just one hour later, Hillery won bronze in the final of the 200m in a time of 29.03.
Niamh Markham started day two with another big performance when taking gold in the 400m in 60.16. She added a silver medal in the U-19 1,500m with a time of 5.05.74 closely followed home in third spot by Jean Clancy St John’s (5.08.07).
In the 60m hurdles U-19 Conor Foley Ellis, Kilmihil, won the bronze medal and on day two he took a silver medal in the shot putt with a throw of 11.08m.
In the 1,500m U-19 Karl Fitzmaurice, Shannon, won a bronze medal in 4.17.86 and in the 800m Ian Slobody, Kilmihil, had to work hard to take a silver medal with a time of 2.10.07.
