Photograph by John KellyWITH just days to go before the Ennis Musical Society take to the stage for their latest production, rehearsals are now in full swing for the troupe. From Tuesday to March 9, a host of local talent will bring the 1930s musical Me and My Girl to live on the Glór stage.
Speaking of the society’s choice of production, EMS chairperson, Kate Corrigan said Me and My Girl is probably less well known than the society’s recent productions of The Sound of Music and Oliver! “But this is a great show and one to be enjoyed by all ages,” she added.
Set in 1930s’ London, this comedy tells the story of a Cockney lad – Bill Snibson – who, it transpires, is heir to the title of Earl of Hareford, the head of a haughty and aristocratic family. In order to claim his title, Bill has to learn gentlemanly ways but whatever chance Bill has of overcoming his lowly background, his commoner girlfriend, Sally, is considered totally unacceptable to the family.
With songs such as The Lambeth Walk, Leaning on a Lamppost and Me and My Girl, the show is sure to entertain. “It’s a story of great intrigue,” comments Kate. “Will Bill succeed in claiming his title? Will he be forced to change his ways? Will Sally and Bill’s love endure when the odds are really stacked against them? Well to find out, people will just have to come to our performances in March.
This is an important year for the musical society in Ennis, marking its 60th musical production in the town. “We’ve reached an important milestone in the history of the society,” continues Kate, “and we really want to run a very successful week of performances in March.” Tickets are on sale from the Glór box office on 065 6843103.
