McMahon at Ennis Singers Club

ROBBIE McMahon will be the special guest at Ennis Singers Club at Cois na hAbhna in Ennis this Friday at 9pm.

Robbie, who celebrated his 84th birthday in December, has entertained thousands of people at home and abroad since the 1950s.
A spokesman for the Ennis Singers Club said Robbie is the uncrowned king of Spancilhill, a place which he has sung into world fame through the song Spancilhill, which was originally a poem by Michael Considine, who was dying in California and was longing for his native parish and his sweetheart, Mary McNamara. The words of the song are included in the German textbook for learning English as a foreign language and is one of the most well known songs in Ireland.
“Robbie’s contribution to singing, lilting and Irish culture is immense. He is known the length and breadth of Ireland. His foreign tours have brought his talent to many audiences abroad,” the singers club spokesman added. Robbie was recently honoured in a documentary film, Last Night as I Lay Dreaming.
Apart from the excellence of his singing, Robbie is also known to be extremely generous to other singers and encouraging to young singers. He is also the founding president of the Ennis Singers Club, which was started in 1996.
In recent years he has established Robbie’s First Friday at Duggan’s Public House in Spancilhill, where singers from Clare, other counties and abroad gather for lively informal sessions.
Joining Robbie on Friday night will be a visiting group of singers from Roscommon and Westmeath, led by Declan Coyne, who broadcasts a traditional music programme in Roscommon.
All are welcome to the Ennis Singers Club session.
