McDermott wants another year in charge
“I have met with board officers who wanted to review the season and, when asked, I confirmed that I am interested in continuing as manager for another year. Our performances in Division 4 of the league were disappointing last year and I feel there is more in us,” McDermott said this week.
The Cavan native, who is currently in charge of Limerick champions Monaleen, said he is now “waiting to hear back from the board”. Asked about speculation that changes in the backroom team are being considered, he said, “Nothing was discussed about the backroom team at our meeting and I haven’t even spoken to James or Liam.”
He agreed that it would be the manager’s call to nominate the personnel for the backroom team. “When I was first appointed I put forward the names of my backroom team for ratification and I expected it will be the same now for whoever is appointed as manager.
There was disappointment in the camp when Clare failed to get out of Division 4 for the second year in succession.
In the championship, they came up against the defending All-Ireland champions, Cork, in their opening tie and having lost to the Leesiders they were then drawn against the All-Ireland runners-up from last year, Down, where they gave, arguably, their best performance of the year before being most unlucky to lose to the Ulster side by the minimum margin in Cusack Park.
At last week’s special board meeting, chairman Michael O’Neill said that the appointment of the various management teams would be discussed “at the August or September meetings”.
