Marty takes lead role in RTÉ GAA

Marty Morrisey was this week named as RTE’s Gaelic games correspondent.

He joined the RTÉ sports department in 1994, specialising in all matters GAA. Throughout the years, Morrisey has commentated and reported on many sports as well as presenting numerous programmes. He has worked on some of RTÉ Sport’s biggest productions including the Olympics, Pro-Box Live and RTÉ’s flagship GAA programming. He has also presented Countrywide and The Mooney Show on RTÉ Radio 1.

“While I was born in Mallow, Clare is my home. My mother is a native of Mallow and two weeks after my birth the family moved to New York where we spent the next 11 years before returning to Quilty,” Marty told The Clare Champion this week

Marty studied at St Flannan’s College in Ennis and at University College Cork and taught for four years at St Joseph’s Secondary School, Spanish Point, before graduating with an Honours Masters Degree in Education (MEd) from NUIG with his thesis on The Evolution of Broadcasting in Ireland, including a Study of Educational Services.

“I started freelancing in 1989 before joining RTE in Cork in 1990 having spent time with Clare FM. After four years in Cork, I joined the RTE sports team in 1994. I am delighted and honoured to be given this opportunity and I am looking forward to the challenge,” Morrisey said this week

His role as a GAA commentator for RTÉ Sport will continue.
