Making national road funding go miles further

ALTHOUGH the National Roads Authority (NRA) €5,450,934 allocation to Clare for the maintenance of national roads in the county was the lowest in Munster, several projects in West Clare will benefit.

Moyadda in Kilrush is the largest beneficiary in West Clare, receiving €360,000 towards pavement overlay works.
A figure of €270,000 will be used for pavement overlay in Knockalough, Kilmihil. €15,000 will be spent on Knockalough Cross and €30,000 on Bansha Cross, Doonbeg. €198,000 has been secured for pavement overlay in Miltown Malbay on the Quilty Road, while pavement overlay in Shandrum, Quilty will be funded up to €94,500. Lack West pavement overlay will receive a grant of €135,000.
Mayor of Clare Christy Curtin said the overall figure represents a 50% increase on last year’s allocation of funds for national secondary roads in Clare. He noted that 15 improvement work projects have been earmarked on the N67 (Kilkee to Miltown road), in Lissycasey, Knockalough and Lack West and in parts of North Clare bordering the west of the county.
“This is the forerunner of further funding for this network of roads which have suffered from under funding in recent years,” Councillor Curtin commented. The grant allocation does not include non-national roads.
