Magpies bag world records

Clarecastle Gathering 2013 got off to a great start on Friday with the setting of a new world record and the breaking of an existing one. Players and friends from all over Clare came to take part .

The first record set was for the most people controlling a sliotar on a hurley, in which 577 people took part. This was a mass participation event designed to involve everybody present and provided great enjoyment.

The second record was an attempt to break an existing official Guinness World Record attempt for the most people performing a hurling solo run.

This was a more restricted grouping, those over 10 and those capable of running 15 metres, yet 362 people took part and of those, 358 completed the task successfully.
The existing record is 250, so that number was easily exceeded.

Details will be submitted to Guinness for official recognition of this achievement.

A variety of other activities took place over the weekend, including a Heritage Display, an Abbey to Abbey walk with more than 200 participants, the GAA Lá na gClub and a fantastic concert with Folk the Recession. The festival has something for everyone and continues until Sunday 21, with details of the programme available on Facebook at Clarecastle Gathering 2013.
