Mad Men hairstyles still on trend this season

FOR the first time, the world’s most creative stylists will descend on Dublin to compete at the OMC European Championships in Hair and Beauty on May 29 and 30. They will sculpt, tease and style hair into amazing works of art and ahead of the event, Ennis hair stylist Bridget Haren, who will compete at the championships, has compiled tips on hair trends and how to maintain healthy hair throughout the summer months.
“Keep your hair well-conditioned. Everyone loves sleek, shiny locks,” says Bridget.
“Treatments are key to the maintenance of healthy hair; find out what type of treatment your hair needs. For example, if you have dull, brittle hair, you need a protein treatment to restore strength and vitality. If you have naturally dry hair, you need a moisturising treatment. Joico’s humidity blocker spray comes highly recommended for protecting hair and only use hair straighteners and products occasionally,” she continues.
The Irish Hairdressers Federation will host the OMC event alongside the annual Hairdressing Championships, as well as the Hair and Beauty Expo 2011, which offers an opportunity to engage with hair and beauty professionals and see the latest trends and products in make-up, tanning, eyelashes, nails and hair extensions.
“With the Mad Men phenomenon still sweeping the fashion and beauty world, 1960s Mad Men hairstyles are most definitely on trend this season. This trend blends slick structure and the softness of curls. The ‘Betty Draper’ look encompasses the elegant housewife image with soft curls. To achieve this look, simply add some sculpting cream to hair and set in hot rollers for 20 minutes, then brush out the curls and spray with a strong holding spray.
“The ‘Don Draper’ look oozes powerful businessman. The look is very clean and structured. To achieve this, hair must be cut short on the sides, the neckline must be tapered and the hair longer on the top of the head. Use a moulding clay and comb hair backwards. Finish with hairspray,” Bridget outlines.
On bridal trends, the Clare woman believes “softness is definitely on trend at the moment. The 1920s to 1950s hairstyles are making a comeback, bringing with it the revival of the ‘fingerwave’ and the ‘bob’. On upstyles it is the Eva Longoria loose curls, gently pinned-back look and the backcombed top that are proving popular this season. My advice, stick with the classic, feminine looks,” Bridget suggests.
For an opportunity to see Ireland’s top stylists competing with the best hair stylists from over 40 countries, visit the OMC European Championships in the RDS, Dublin on May 29 and 30.
