Locals sparkle at Munster Juvenile Championships

The Munster Juvenile B Track and Field Championships for U-9 to U-16 were held in humid weather conditions at the Lees Road Sports Complex last wekend.
Clare athletes captured 18 gold medals, 19 silver and 23 bronze.
In the girls’ U-9, Ella Duff (Shannon) captured gold in the long jump and a silver medal in the 60m sprint while in the boys’ U-9, Ian Collins (Olympic Harriers) took gold in the long jump with Colin Curran (Shannon) winning gold in the ball throw and Noah McConway (St Cronan’s) taking gold in the 300m, silver in the long jump and bronze in the 60m.
In the girls’ U-11, Niamh Conlon (Kilmihil) came through three rounds to take the gold medal and also captured a bronze medal in the 600m, with Keisha Attewell (St Mary’s) taking gold in the 600m and a bronze medal in the ball throw.
In the boys’ U-11, Shane Harrison (St Cronan’s) won the 60m title.
There was double silver for Ben Whelehan (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) in the 60m and 600m, while Shane Meehan (Marian) won bronze in the ball throw and long jump.
Laura Greene (St John’s) won gold in the girls’ U-12 high jump and her twin sister, Kate, won a bronze medal in the shot putt. There was silver for Darragh Miniter (St Mary’s) in the boys’ U-12 high jump and shot putt.
There were a host of Clare athletes competing in the U-13 section and Tara Kelly (St Mary’s) won bronze in the 60m and long jump while in the boys’ U-13 there was gold for Luke Callinan (St Mary’s) in the 80m.
In the girls’ U-14 shot putt, Katie Taylor (St Cronan’s) won gold and also took a silver medal in the high jump, with Patrick O’Rourke (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) leading from start to finish to take the gold medal in the 800m.
In the girls’ U-15 shot putt Mia Hanrahan (Ennis Track) won the gold and also finished third in the 800m. The big winner in the U-15 girls was Cliodhna Blake (St John’s) who took gold in the high jump and long jump.
In the boys’ U-15, Barry Loughnane (St Cronan’s) won gold in the shot putt and a silver medal in the long jump.
In the boys’ U-16 100m, ­Ronan Barry (Marian) was a very impressive winner and also took gold in the high jump.
