Liostra na Laochra awards for Senan’s and Tones

SHANNON Town Council presented its Liosta na Laochra awards and distributed its community grants last week, with a number of national title winners honoured. Two clubs were honoured in the Liosta na Laochra awards. St Senan’s were acknowledged for their work in the provision of facilities, while Wolfe Tones Camogie Club were honoured for their achievement in opening the first dedicated camogie pitch in Ireland.
Besides the two clubs, there were five individual winners. These were Patrick McDonagh, All-Ireland schoolboy boxing champion in the 39 kilo division; Jamie Roughan, member of the All-Ireland winning Clare U-21 panel; Matthew Mason, All-Ireland tumbling champion in the Elite Junior Boys’ 13-16 years section; Gary Keane, award winner at the Amateur Irish Musical Societies Awards and Stephanie Regan, a member of the Clare ladies’ football panel that captured the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship.
“It’s great to see the clubs honoured and both of them have been very proactive in providing facilities in Shannon. St Senan’s have done a lot of work and it’s great that Wolfe Tones are the first camogie club to have their own field. We’ve had a lot of success in sport as well and that gives a great boost to people,” said Mayor of Shannon, Seán McLoughlin.
Eighteen different groups received sums of money ranging from €200 to €500 under the Community Grants scheme.
Councillor McLoughlin said that it’s important that small community groups are not forgotten and that a couple of hundred euros can be significant for them.
“It’s good to be able to give this money to the smaller groups and it can make a big difference to them,” he said.
