Late penalty win for Doonbeg

Doonbeg 1-10
Lissycasey 1-13 (AET)

There are no shortage of talking points following this exciting first round game which required extra time to separate the teams at Kilmihil on Saturday evening. In the end, Doonbeg’s greater experience won the day and they deservingly took the spoils.

The dismissal of Frank O’Dea on a straight red card after just 14 minutes, a disputed Lissycasey point near the end of the third quarter and the awarding of a controversial penalty to the Magpies at the start of extra time are just some of the topics fans debated as they departed Kilmihil on Saturday evening.

Another talking point was Lissycasey’s short passing game with many of the opinion that a more direct approach would have yielded greater results.
“Experience got us over the line. We knew what we were up against in Lissycasey. We knew it was going to be a savage challenge and there was extra pressure after losing a man after ten minutes.

“In fairness to Doonbeg, they showed the character they have always had. A lot of players stood up today. We have a decent panel and we have a lot of work put in the last few weeks.

“Lissycasey are not out of the championship yet. They have a young vibrant team and a good management. We have just won the first round of the championship, that’s all,” according to Doonbeg manager Ciaran O’Neill.

“These lads have character. It’s only three years since Doonbeg won the championship and that stood to us today and in injury time. We have a serious work ethic going in Doonbeg,” the Doora-Barefield man added.
Lissycasey boss Barry Donnelly felt the penalty decision was the difference.

“We have a young side and we are building. I knew coming here we could give a performance and compete with one of the better teams in the county. These things hang on small decisions and they got one or two of the 50-50 decisions.”
A blistering start gave Doonbeg a grip on this tie as they raced four points clear after just nine minutes. A further three went by before Lissycasey opened their account through championship debutant Conor Finnucane whose powerful drive just went over Eamonn Tubridy’s crossbar.

Two minutes later the Magpies were down to 14 men after Rory Hickey, following consultation with his umpires, produced a straight red card to Frank O’Dea following an off-the-ball incident that left Lissycasey midfielder Enda Finnucane requiring attention.
From here to the half time whistle it was the Magpies who played as if they had the extra man and when the short whistle sounded they were four points clear, 0-6 to 0-2.

They had the first score of the second half when Enda Doyle pointed but gradually Lissycasey came more into the game. The introduction of the experienced Alan Nagle and teenager Oisin Hanrahan boosted Lissycasey and by the end of the third quarter, the margin was down to three, 0-7 to 0-4. The loss of Cathal Doohan to injury was a blow to Lissycasey but his replacement Cyril Sheehan did well.
Doonbeg still led by three points inside the last five minutes but Lissycasey continued to pile on the pressure and three minutes from time they were rewarded when David Considine broke through and drilled the ball low to the net.

Doonbeg created a couple of goal scoring chances in normal time but, on two occasions, Lissycasey goalkeeper Joe Hayes denied Shane O’Brien with good stops.
Three minutes into the first period of extra time, referee Rory Hickey penalised Lissycasey captain Gerry Moran as he and Enda Doyle fought for possession and pointed to the penalty spot. Brian Dillon drilled the spot kick low to the corner and it proved to be the crucial score.

At the turnover just the minimum separated the sides, 1-10 to 1-9 in the magpies favour. In the second period Shane Ryan proved to be the hero with three points from play. Ryan hadn’t started the game but came into the action early in the second half of normal time. Twenty minutes later he was replaced but returned for the second half of extra time to make a huge contribution.
