FRESH from a successful run at the Dublin International Gay Theatre Festival, the Bottom Dog Theatre Company arrive in Ennis this week with their production Language Unbecoming a Lady.
This one-man show was written and performed by Limerick actor Myles Breen and is coming to Glór this Saturday.
Originally presented as part of Limerick Pride in 2009, the play is set in the dressing room of Robert, an ageing drag queen who reveals his life and loves, victories and defeats.
Exploring the themes of identity, love found and love lost using the music of Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Billie Holiday and more, Language Unbecoming a Lady tells the story of one gay man’s life.
Myles Breen is a founder member of Bottom Dog and as well as being a writer and director, he is one of the busiest actors in the country with a list of theatre, television and film credits stretching back over 20 years. He is directed in Language Unbecoming A Lady by another Bottom Dog founder, Liam O’Brien.
Liam has previously directed for Limerick Youth Theatre and Bottom Dog and is just back from training in ensemble with Steppenwolf Theatre Company in California and was part of the Next Stage development programme at this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival.
Bottom Dog premiered five short plays in January 2009 under the title Off The Wall, a new adaptation of The Revenger’s Tragedy and Language Unbecoming A Lady continues the company’s commitment to new writing. The show toured throughout May and has now embarked on a longer nationwide tour.
Bottom Dog Theatre Company was founded in November 2008 by Myles Breen, Mike Burke, Mike Finn and Liam O’Brien. The company premiered a new version of The Revenger’s Tragedy by Finn in November at the Belltable (as part of the Limerick Theatre Hub Season) and was nominated for an Irish Times Theatre Award (Best Set Design).
Their production Porkville (written and performed by Finn and Breen) premiered at the company’s own venue The Loft in Limerick and ran to huge success for seven weeks this summer. Most recently, the company produced the Irish premiere of the international hit Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens for a sold out week at the Loft.
