Lahinch too strong for Trinity College

IN the annual fixture between Lahinch and Trinity College, Dublin, the Clare team emerged victorious on a 7½ to ½ scoreline recently at Lahinch.

 

Stephen Loftus, Aaron McNulty and Thomas Neenan won their matches against Darragh Coughlan, Ruairí Kennelly and Harry McHugh on one up scores. Peter Hennessy was a two and one winner over Alan Hopkins, while Adrian McMahon Lyons beat Andrew Stokes by the same margin. John Dillon was a three and two winner over Johnny O’Driscoll, while Colm McInerney beat Aidan O’Mahony by six and five. The match between Cathal Hegarty and Nick Armstrong was halved.

Inclement weather disrupted the weekend schedule with the course not opening until late on Saturday and Sunday due to the frosty conditions.


Ennis

ENNIS Seniors held a 14-hole fourball competition last week and the winners, with 41 points, were Johnny Cullinan and Tony Coote from Ferdie O’Donogue and Pat O’Reilly, who also had 41 points. In third spot with 40 points were John McEntee and Pat Cahill, followed by Conor Murphy and Paschal Russell also with 40, Gerry Gilligan and Michael Torpey with 40 and Pat Cusack and Michael Vaughan with 39.


Clare hurlers

THE Clare hurlers from the 1995 to 2000 era held a very successful outing to Galway Bay last week when captain Barry Murphy presented the first prize to the winning team in the scramble led by Seanie McMahon including Ger Moroney, David Hoey and Frank Lohan, with a gross score of 65.

Barry acknowledged all who played and the large number who attended the evening social, as well as Pat O’Donnell for his support for the outing. David Hoey was elected as the incoming captain, with Ger O’Loughlin elected as vice-captain.

The next outing is planned for December 28.


Dromoland

DUE to the inclement weather, there was no competition at Dromoland last weekend. The turkey competition will continue until Sunday, December 16.

Entries are now being taken for the winter league.


East Clare

THE winner of the men’s 15-hole singles competition at East Clare was Teddy O’Hanlon with 39 points from Paul Hayes on 33.

Kathleen O’Brien won the ladies’ nine-hole singles from Bríd Hayes, with Brigid Minogue in third spot.
In the ladies’ seniors outing, the winners were Catherine Murphy, Marie Moloney and Marie Kelly from Bríd Hayes, Mary Collins and Connie McKenna, with third spot filled by Ina Reddan, Phil Burke and Mary Brennan.
The annual mass for deceased members will take place next Monday at 7pm.


Spanish Point

LUCIA Cronin was the winner of the Christmas hamper competition for ladies at Spanish Point with a score of 35 points. There will be a three-ball scramble next Sunday with the draw for partners at 11.45am. The presentation of prizes will take place afterwards.

Members are reminded that the annual general meeting of the parent club takes place on Saturday night at 8.30pm in the clubhouse. A full agenda is scheduled to include the various reports from 2012, the election of officers and committee for 2013 and discussion of motions.

Despite the poor weather, the seniors’ open was played on Tuesday and Eamon Murphy (10) won with 27 points. The men’s turkey competition last weekend was played in scotch foursomes format and the winners, with a score of 47 points, were P J Killeen (18) and Martin O’Gorman (19). This weekend, there is a team scramble and the men’s hampers will be played for on December 8 and 9.

Kilmihil Golf Society
THE society will hold a 12-hole scramble in Kilrush Golf Club this Saturday. The draw takes place at 12.30pm, followed by dinner and presentations at 4.30pm in the clubhouse.

Shannon
In the men’s team-of-four competition at Shannon at the weekend, the winners were John Pearse, John Morrissey, Paudie Ryan and Noel Moloney with 85 points.


Kilrush

The men’s seniors outing at Kilrush last week was won by Mike Ryan, from Tom Coffey, with third spot filled by Tom Prendiville, John Stapleton and Murt Collins.

In the weekly singles, the winner was John Mc Neilis with 34 points from John McGrath with 31 points.   

The weekly singles competition will run from Sunday to Saturday inclusive and re entry is allowed.

The annual general meeting  of the men’s and joint committees will take place on Thursday December 13 in the clubhouse.


Portumna

DUE to a heavy frost over the weekend, the Portumna course was unplayable. Over the coming few weeks, there is a lot of activity taking place.

Last week’s seniors competition was won by Gerry Mannion (17) with 32 points from Mike Carty (14) with 32 points and Gene McEntee (15) with 30 points.

The ladies’ AGM, which was deferred from last weekend, will now be held this coming Sunday at 4pm in the committee room of Portumna Golf Club.

The club will host a Texas Hold ’Em poker classic on Friday, December 7, at 8pm.

The Final Fling will be on Sunday, December 9. This will include men’s Christmas hampers and the presentation of prizes to the golfer of the year winner and matchplay winners.

Pitch and putt
PJ Considine and Tommy Kelly were the winners of the two-ball scramble at The Clare Road Club on Sunday last. Second were Noel Cuddihy and Billy Griffen.
