NORTH Clare residents are being asked to support a novelty cycle through Lahinch for the Irish Cancer Society. Three brave, fit young men have decided to throw caution to the wind, saddle up, all on the one bike, and cycle through 17 counties in the name of charity and good humour.
The three men, Andrew Doyle, Declan Prior and Shane Healy, are gearing up for a 1,700km, 24-day cycle around Ireland on a three-man bike in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
The unique Tour De Ireland will take the three Dublin lads to Lahinch on July 9, which is day 14 of their adventure. The threesome are urging locals to spare some pocket money to help them raise funds for the cause.
“We are really excited about the challenge but I don’t mind admitting that we are a bit nervous about spending so much time in such close proximity to one another,” confessed Shane, the joker of the group.
The 10ft long bike contains three seats but only two wheels, 24 gears but only two sets of brakes and has been reportedly spotted doing 55km per hour.
“Unfortunately, cancer is a disease that affects many families throughout Ireland and mine has been no exception. The Irish Cancer Society seemed the obvious choice of charity for us and we are hoping to raise enough money to make a real difference to the lives of others,” said Andrew.
The lads are setting off from Dublin later this month and their 24-day loop around Ireland will take them through Meath, Louth, Down, Antrim, Derry, Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.
“We are really hoping the locals will come out and support us when we get to Lahinch. We arrive in Lahinch on day 14 and leave on day 15. At that stage, we are likely to be a bit sore and tired on the bike so any encouragement we get from residents will be much appreciated.
“We have already had tremendous support from local businesses, including Craglea Lodge in Lahinch, which has offered to put us up for the night,” said Declan, who has admitted that he was hoping the idea was nothing more than ‘pub talk’.
“Of course the best way to support us is to log on to www.3men1bike.com and sponsor us. We are hoping that our antics will all be worth it when we get to hand over a big cheque to the Irish Cancer Society,” added Shane.
The three-man bike, being shipped in from the UK later this week, will be used by the three guys as they attempt to cycle up to 122km a day during their charity adventure.
