Lahinch appoint team managers

THE men’s committee at Lahinch has appointed team managers for all club teams that will represent Lahinch in GUI competitions in 2013. Invitations have been extended to club members who are interested in representing the club to get in touch with any of the managers.

A determined effort to enhance the performances of the various teams is being made and it is planned to set aside a certain number of coaching hours for the team panel members.

Former club captain, Denis Creedon, will manage both the Irish Senior Cup and Barton Shield teams. The senior cup competition will take place at Castletroy on July 6-7, while the Barton Shield is scheduled for Limerick on June 22/23.

Paul O’Brien will manage the Junior Cup team and they will play at Ennis on June 29/30.
Donal Curtin will manage the Jimmy Bruen Shield team and they will play at Shannon on May 11/12, while the Pierce Purcell team will be managed by John Skerritt and they will play at Lahinch (Castle Course) on May 25/26.

John Morrison will manage the mixed foursomes team, who will play at Dromoland Castle on June 15 and 16.
Last Saturday’s men’s singles v par was won by Frank Considine (11) with six up from Jim Young (6) with five up.

In the scotch mixed foursomes on Sunday, Michael (11) and Jenny Cagney (14) were the winners with 39 points from Ronan Murphy (6) and Anne Vaughan (13) with 36 points.

In the men’s scotch foursomes on Sunday, John Jnr (5) and John Skerritt (12) were the winners with 40 points.

 

Ennis
THE men’s 16-hole competition at Ennis at the weekend was a fourball better outing and the winners were Sean Rynne and Gerry O’ Connor with 43 points from John Byrnes and Jimmy Griffin with 41 points. In third spot were Tony Coote and Tim McAllister with 41 points, with fourth spot filled by Andrew McCloin and James Keane with 40 points. In fifth spot were Ian Myatt and Enda Heaney with 39 points.

Ennis Seniors held a team of three competition last week when the winners with 58 points were Brian Higgins, John McEntee and Tony Coote, who had a hole-in-one on the 16th. Second place was filled by Pierce Cahill, Dick Burke and Luke Coote with 58 points and they were followed by Denis O’Ceallaigh, Jimmy Kearns and Eamon Murphy with 56 points. In fourth spot with 56 points were Fintan McEvoy, Don Ryan and Sean Fitzpatrick, followed by Peadar Cosgrove, Michael Butler and John Guilfoyle with 56 points with Tommy Purcell, Tony Lynch and Paschal Russell, also with 56 points, in sixth spot.

Dromoland

TEAM 14 (Gerry McInerney, Paul O’Brien, Diarmuid McMahon, Michael Flannery and Gerry Malone) won week five of the Winter League at Dromoland Castle. Their best three Stableford scores combined yielded 118 points.

The weekly winner for week five was Tony Cotgreave, with 42 points.

Team 14 are followed by Team 8 (Jimmy McManus, Aidan McMahon, Dermot O’Neill, Frank O’Grady and Sean Conway) and Team 4 (Seamus Cusack, Jason Ronan, John O’Neill, Frank Barry and Philip Hehir).
Team 4 (Joan Ryan, Maria Nolan, Dolores Fox, Laura Haugh, Cora O’Toole and Mary Keane) lead the way in the ladies’ Winter League.

The senior ladies winner was Mary Galvin, followed in second place by Ber McDermott.

Club captains for 2013, John O’Halloran and Marie Nolan, will drive in to office on Sunday at 3p.m. There will be a team of three scramble at 12.30pm.

Kilrush

THE winners of the men’s seniors outing at Kilrush last week were TJ Lyons, Jim McSwiggan and Tom Prendeville with 60 points, from Denis Nagle, Billy Clarke and Sean Moran on 55 points, with third spot filled by David Eastham, John Stapleton and Fr Tom McGrath on 51 points.

The Spring League will continue until this Saturday. The leading team after week two is Tony McMahon, Finbarr McMahon Jimmy McSwiggan and Michael Hogan.

Mid-West Alliance

IN the Mid-West Alliance outing at Dromoland last week, Cian McNamara won the gross with 70 from David Foley on 72 and Fergus Harold on 72.

The nett category was won by Alan Neville on 67 from David Casey on 70 and Pat Lucey, also on 70.

The winners in the nearest-the-pin competition were Ian Dowling (7th hole), Dave O’Donovan (13th hole) and David Foley (17th hole).

The prizes for the most birdies (total of four) were won by David Foley, Mark Reynolds, Cian McNamara, Fergus Harold, Tim Rice, Ian Colleran, Dave O’Donovan, Alan Neville, Mike Kemmy and Mike Quinlivan.

Doonbeg

JOHN Maguire was the winner of last Sunday’s singles at Doonbeg Links, followed by Shane Igoe and Kieran Golden. Kevin Hayes had a hole in one on the 17th.

The next competition will be on Sunday, March 2.

East Clare

IN the men’s 15-hole fourball at East Clare at the weekend, the winners were Kieran Quinn (17) and Kieran Kennedy (15) with 39 points from Liam Nolan (18) and Paul Madden (15), who had a similar score.

The winners in the men’s seniors outing were John Fleming, Nick Ryan and John Brett from Liam Nolan, Willie Roche and Jackie McHugh, with third spot filled by Mick Gough, Tony McNulty and Paddy Carney.
The ladies team of two winners were Bríd Hayes and Mary Brennan with 37 points from Celia Moloney and Pauline Nugent with 37 points.

In the ladies seniors’ competition, the winner was Joan Kinsella from Sue Casey, while the ladies’ nine-hole re-entry competition was won by Catherine Murphy from Ina Reddan.

Next weekend, the men’s club will hold a two-person scramble.

Spanish Point

THE winner of the very well supported Tuesday Seniors with 21 players entering was Eamonn Murphy, with a score of 38 points from John O’Brien with 37 points.

The winners of the weekend team of three or four scramble were Eoghan O’Loughlin, Brendan Sexton, Fergal Hehir and Bernie O’Halloran with a score of 55. The extremely successful winter schedule of events is drawing to a close over the next few weeks and this weekend there is an 18-hole singles Stableford competition, with the usual time sheets in operation.

Martin Glenny and Eoghan O’Loughlin have been appointed as Town’s Cup and Pierce Purcell captains respectively for 2013 and any members interested in playing for Spanish Point are asked to contact them.

Gort

THE captain’s (John Skehill and Phil Mulkerrins) drive-in nine-hole scramble on Sunday was won by John, Margaret and Fiona Kelleher from Margaret and Martin Whelan and Kevin Mulkerrins. In third spot were John Daly, Michael Carey and Mary Fahey Coen.

In the weekend 18-hole singles Stableford, Owen O’Donnell (21) was the winner with 46 points from John Cunningham (18) with 45 points. In third spot was Mike Bindon (18) also with 45 points, followed by Declan O’Halloran (15) with 44 points. The gross winner was Colman Cooney (3) with 30 points.

There will be an 18-hole singles this weekend with the Monday open singles continuing. The lades singles is also continuing.

Portumna

IN the men’s 14-hole competition at Portumna at the weekend, Andrew McCarthy (10) was the winner of the 0-10 category with 29 points. Gerard Brehony (13) also scored 29 points when winning the category 1-14.

Mike Goode (15) was the winner of the category 15-18 with 30 points, while Phonsie Ryan (19) won the category 19 and over section with 30 points. Dave Burnett (17) won the seniors’ section with 32 points.
In the ladies’ 14-hole competition, Carmel Cunningham was the winner with 36 points from Mary McElroy on 30 points.

After two weeks of the ladies’ Spring League, all teams are still very much in contention. The club open three-ball continues until mid-April, while there will be a Progressive 25 card game this Friday and again next Friday.

Corofin

LADY golfers dominated the opening singles event of the Corofin Society at Portumna on Saturday last. Mary Coen finished in first place ahead of Geraldine Lynch. Brendan McDonagh was third, with the nines won by Pat McCarthy and Pat Curtis.

The next outing of the society will be to Dromoland on Saturday, March 16.

Pitch and putt

NOEL Cuddihy and Tommy Kelly won the two-ball scramble at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday with a score of 26 under. The runners-up were Gerry Kierce and Paddy Sheedy.

The Mickey Kerin Shield will be played for on Sunday, March 3.
