Kilrush to host money-spinning triathlon

Kilrush will host one of three Tri3 Triathlon Series events to be held in Ireland this year. It is expected to attract hundreds of participants and spectators to the town on Saturday, September 4, which should be a huge boost to the West Clare economy. The event will also support a nominated charity in the West Clare area.

At the launch of the Tri3 Triathlon Series on Monday were, from left, Sports AI director Tony Griffin with Daithí Ó Sé and triathlete Kathleen Tierney. The event will follow similar triathlons held in Galway and Cahir. Sports AI, the sports management company that managed the visit of Muhammad Ali to Ennis last summer, announced on Monday that they will bring the Tri3 Triathlon Series to Ireland this year.
The Kilrush triathlon will be the third in the summer series and will incorporate a 750m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run.
The swim will be held in Kilrush Marina, where the gates will be closed from the elements, while the cycle will snake around Cappa village and out to Killimer before culminating in Kilrush, where the town square will be closed to traffic.
Half of the 5km run will be in quiet countryside before the participants pound the streets of Kilrush, including Francis Street, which is the second widest street in Ireland.
The Tri3 Series was launched in Galway this week by Dáithí Ó Sé and Tony Griffin. Organisers believe that the three events will inject close to €1 million into the economies of the participating towns.
“We are delighted to bring these events to Ireland and to see an injection into each local economy as a result of the races. The locations are great and we look forward to exciting events in Kilrush, Galway, and Cahir,” former Clare hurler and co-founder of Sports AI, Tony Griffin said at the launch.
To register for the Kilrush triathlon or the events in Galway (May 29) or Cahir (July 10), log onto www.tr13.ie or email info@TRI3.ie
