RESIDENTS of O’Gorman Street in Kilrush have presented Kilrush Town Council with a petition signed by 43 people in support of installing ramps on the street and on the Back Road in Kilrush.
The matter was discussed at the September meeting of Kilrush Town Council, where it was noted that the council had, at that stage, received just one submission in support of putting speed ramps in place.
“There was 43 signatures altogether,” O’Gorman Street resident Joanne Carrig confirmed with reference to the petition.
In a covering letter on behalf the residents, which accompanied the petition, Ms Carrig underlined the necessity of speed ramps as far as the residents are concerned.
“Every resident I spoke to has passed comment that they have seen cars racing each other and speeding at all hours of the morning,” the letter to Kilrush Town Council read.
The letter, which was dated Thursday, September 13, warned that excessive speeding could lead to a potentially fatal accident.
“Being a mother of a 10-month-old, I feel that ramps would be the only solution before someone gets killed or badly injured,” Ms Carrig warned.
Speaking to The Clare Champion on Wednesday, Sonia Carrig, also an O’Gorman Street resident, voiced her concern.
“The speeding is unreal here at the moment. They’re starting at O’Brien’s shop on the Back Road and flying all the way down past the school, the church and the library. Sometimes they haven’t even lights on and they’re not stopping at the cross down here either. It’s deadly dangerous what’s going on. I think it would be worthwhile putting ramps in. The safety of a child should be put first,” Ms Carrig said.
“They have a fine stretch of road there to speed on. It’s crazy. It’s about the life of a child or the life of an old person,” Ms Carrig reiterated.
“The Back Road has been mentioned as a location where members have observed speeding. It was agreed that we would write to the residents but unfortunately we’ve only had the one observation with regard to speeding. Again, maybe people weren’t keen on formally replying in writing,” Kilrush town clerk John Corry said at this month’s meeting.
At the same meeting, Councillor Paul Moroney supported the placing of additional ramps on the route in question.
“I just think that there’s no greater barrier to speed than speed ramps. I don’t know about the rest of the councillors but I’ve been inundated with people coming up to me about speeding around the town,” Councillor Moroney stated.
